James Suckling (JS) :
95 Points
(2016)
Lots of plum and dark-berry character with citrus, cedar and sandalwood. Very pure sangiovese. Full-bodied with firm, racy tannins and cool, vivid fruit at the finish. Some mineral, tar and steel undertones. Needs time to open and soften. Better than the 2015. Try after 2023. (JS) (11/2020)
Robert Parker (RP) :
94 Points
(2016)
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers clean and pristine fruit and otherwise delivers a textbook interpretation of the vintage. Given the large extension of vineyards farmed by this estate, which is located on the southern side of the appellation, and the deft technological approach employed in the winery, you can count on Castello Banfi to offer an authentic read of any of their wines about to hit the market or that have been aged at the back of your cellar. Indeed, the Banfi library of wines acts as an institutional memory of modern Brunello. This edition shows sharp and focused fruit with leather, potting soil and balsam herb. For a straight-up classic Brunello, this wine delivers the goods. (ML) (11/2020)
Wine Spectator (WS) :
93 Points
(2015)
Intense, with tension between the bright strawberry and cherry fruit flavors and the compact feel of the tannic structure. Wild herb, almond and earth accents add detail. There is a lot going on in this red, stretched tightly. Long finish. (BS) (4/2020)
Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) :
90 Points
(2015)
Good full ruby-red. Roasted currants, cocoa and tobacco leaf on the nose. Suave, broad and ripe, with a savory quality to the red cherry, chocolate and leather suggestions. Closes medium-long and clean, with a lingering savory echo. (ID) (4/2020)
Wine Enthusiast (WE) :

(2013)
Forest floor, wild berry, coffee and toasted oak aromas come together on this. The medium-bodied palate is on the lean side, offering sour cherry, tobacco leaf, espresso and a saline note alongside lithe tannins. Drink 2020–2028.
