Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Bright pale straw colour.
Nose: An open fragrant perfume reminiscent of apple pie, delicate spice and milk arrowroot biscuits. Perfectly ripe notes of lemon, peach and mango mingle with light pear and a hint of white pepper.
Palate: A very comfortable mouthfeel with fleshy softness, fruit sweetness and full body tempered by a beautiful fresh acid crunch toward the finish. Almost a mango-like texture with a tangy twist, fused with slightly undercooked pie crust.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2021)
A white of solid fruit with white peaches, apple and hints of vanilla and oak. Medium to full body, creamy texture and a flavorful finish. Lots going on here.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2021)
The entry level Chard from Margaret River's oldest estate is a steal, and a stellar intro to this West Aussie style. Delicate and seamlessly integrated notes of lightly toasted hazelnut and cream lead, with a salty sea breeze vibe. The pineapple, melon and preserved lemon notes take supporting roles. It's beautifully balanced, the crunchy acidity neatly juxtaposing the textural weight. Finessed with polish and craftsmanship, but also utterly drinkability now.Editors' Choice

Robert Parker (RP) : 90 Points (2021)
Crunchy, minerally and taut, a briney seam of acidity and phenolics strike through the heart of this wine and pull it through the finish. This 2021 Filius Chardonnay is the crunchy, vibrant end of the Chardonnay spectrum, not just within the Vasse Felix house style but within the regional context as well. This is a cleverly made, uncomplicated Chardonnay. I love the salted nuts through the finish.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 90 Points (2020)
A selection from four estate vineyards, this presents a light style with new oak limited to 13 percent of the barrels. Born out of a spontaneous fermentation, the wine presents flinty reduction along with scents of chamomile and hay. It’s full and lush, with apple and bitter mango notes that would take on grilled octopus.

Decanter (DCT) : 91 Points (2018)
Vasse Felix was the first vineyard and winery founded in Margaret River, in 1967. Heytesbury Chardonnay is its icon white (£60), Premier the mid-tier, and its ‘son’ (Filius) is modestly priced, yet delivers a taste of that famous house style: buttery oak, apple crumble, sweet peach, vibrant acidity. Hay Shed Hill and Xanadu’s Estate Chardonnay are other quality buys at a similar price.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2017)
Simultaneously supple and juicy in texture, with an elegant, fresh expression of apple, lemon and melon flavors that are vibrant, intense and mouthwatering. Subtle white pepper and green tea notes linger in the background. Drink now through 2025.

James Halliday (JH) : 90 Points (2016)
Straw-green; an impressive wine that is the bottom rung of a three-tier classification by Vasse Felix. It has abundant, clear-cut varietal character, exactly what you would expect from alcohol at this level. Oak has had a minimal role, helping texture rather than flavour.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2014)
Light, green-tinged yellow. Aromas of fresh melon, pear and Meyer lemon, with subtle hints of toasty lees and fennel emerging with air. Juicy and seamless on the palate, with pliant orchard and pit fruit flavors tightened and lifted by zesty acidity. Finishes sappy and quite long, with an echo of citrus fruits adding bite and focus.

Vasse Felix, Margaret River's founding wine estate, was established by Dr Thomas Brendan Cullity in 1967. Among his first plantings were Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec vines, from which he produced the estate’s first red wine. The Tom Cullity descends from these original vines and represents the pinnacle of Vasse Felix.
