Region and Vineyards

The 2018 Tom Cullity Cabernet Malbec is sourced from Vasse Felix's original vineyard blocks in Wilyabrup, Margaret River’s golden heartland for Cabernet Sauvignon. These dry-grown vines, first planted in 1967, benefit from the region's maritime influence, ancient gravel-loam soils, and a long, temperate growing season that fosters elegance and natural structure in red wines.

The 2018 vintage was exceptional, marked by consistent rainfall during winter that restored soil moisture, followed by a warm but even growing season. Importantly, there was no extreme heat nor pressure from birds—thanks to an unprecedented "mega blossom" of native Marri trees. The grapes were harvested from 23 March to 10 April, under perfect ripening conditions. This is considered one of the finest Margaret River Cabernet vintages of the decade, producing wines of vibrancy, fine tannins, and complexity.

Winemaking

True to Vasse Felix’s philosophy, the 2018 Tom Cullity was crafted with minimal intervention to express vineyard purity. The Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), Malbec (17.5%), and Petit Verdot (4.5%) were hand-picked, then destemmed but not crushed to preserve whole berries. Fermentation occurred using wild yeasts, with 69% fermented statically and 31% in open-top vessels, where the Malbec and some Cabernet were hand-plunged.

An extended skin contact time of 11 to 33 days allowed the development of fine tannins and full flavor extraction. All parcels were basket-pressed to fine French oak barriques, with 59% new oak. The wine matured for 18 months, harmonizing texture and complexity. It was bottled in February 2020, and is vegan-friendly.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Brilliant garnet with a deep purple-black hue.
  • Aroma: Intense and layered, offering aromas of native forest undergrowth, red gravel, and ocean spray, with notes of nori and mushroom. The fruit is vibrant—fresh boysenberry and Turkish delight—balanced by potpourri, red peppercorn, bay seed, and subtle liquorice.
  • Palate: Supremely elegant and poised. The palate is succulent yet powerful, with a lifted, almost weightless structure. Tannins are fine-grained and persistent, encircling a core of perfume and fruit that lingers exquisitely.

Did you know?

The wine takes its name from Dr. Thomas Brendan Cullity, who founded Vasse Felix in 1967. The Tom Cullity bottling is produced only in outstanding vintages and descends from the original vines he planted—making it not just a wine, but a liquid chronicle of Margaret River’s vinous origins.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Wagyu beef ribeye – the wine’s structure and fine tannins complement rich, marbled textures.
  • Duck breast with plum reduction – fruit-driven layers of the wine mirror the sweet-savoury contrast.
  • Porcini mushroom risotto – earthy notes in both wine and dish resonate beautifully.
  • Aged Manchego or Comté – umami depth and firm texture find harmony with the wine’s persistent, savoury core.

History of Vasse Felix

The Vasse Felix story begins with Dr Thomas Brendan Cullity, a visionary cardiologist whose passion for fine wine was awakened during his time in Britain in the 1950s. Inspired by the elegance of European wines and guided by the pioneering viticultural research of Dr John Gladstones and Professor Harold Olmo, Cullity searched for the perfect vineyard site in the untamed southwest of Australia. In 1967, he found his answer in Wilyabrup, a coastal pocket with red gravel soils over clay, protected by towering redgums and just kilometres from the Indian Ocean.

There, he planted 8 hectares of vines, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, and established rudimentary winemaking facilities—initially using repurposed hospital equipment. His early vintages faced scepticism and harsh conditions, but his determination laid the foundation for what would become one of Australia’s great estates.

In 1987, the estate was purchased by the Holmes à Court family, who have since nurtured Vasse Felix with unwavering commitment to quality and innovation, while remaining anchored to Cullity’s original vision: to make the best possible wine.

Chief Winemaker: Virginia Willcock

Appointed in 2006Virginia Willcock is one of Australia’s most respected and awarded winemakers. A graduate of the renowned Roseworthy Agricultural College, Virginia brings over three decades of experience, including vintages in Italy, New Zealand, and Albania, to her role at Vasse Felix.

Her winemaking philosophy is grounded in minimal intervention and a deep reverence for vineyard expression. She is a champion of wild fermentation, extended lees contact, and small-batch vinification—all techniques that heighten complexity and highlight the individuality of each site.

Under her stewardship, Vasse Felix has elevated its reputation both nationally and internationally, with Virginia receiving numerous accolades, including:

  • Australian Winemaker of the Year finalist (Gourmet Traveller Wine)
  • Trophy for Most Outstanding Wine in Show at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show
  • Recognition as one of the definitive voices of Margaret River terroir

Virginia’s leadership has helped shape Vasse Felix’s distinct style: wines of precision, purity and place, consistently praised for their structure, finesse, and ageability.

Region and Vineyards

Vasse Felix is located in the heart of Margaret River, a remote and pristine wine region in Western Australia that has emerged as one of the world’s premier sites for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The region’s unique terroir—ancient gravel-loam soils, a Mediterranean climate, and strong maritime influence—provides ideal conditions for slow, even ripening and the preservation of acidity, aromatic intensity, and structure.

Although Margaret River accounts for only 3% of Australia’s total grape production, it contributes over 20% of its premium wine market, a testament to its exceptional growing conditions and commitment to quality.

Vasse Felix farms three primary vineyards:

  • Home Vineyard (Wilyabrup): The original site selected by Dr Cullity, situated along Wilyabrup Brook. This iconic vineyard delivers powerful yet refined Cabernet Sauvignon, marked by gravelly loam soils and ocean proximity that moderates temperature extremes.
  • Karridale Vineyard: Located in the cooler southern part of the region, Karridale provides tension, brightness and aromatics, particularly valued in Chardonnay and white blends.
  • Carbunup Vineyard: Known for its warmer conditions, Carbunup contributes generosity, ripeness and texture, making it an essential component in blending for volume and richness.

All vineyards are cultivated with sustainable and organic principles, with site-specific approaches to variety, row orientation, and canopy management. Grapes are hand-picked in small parcels, fermented and aged separately, and undergo a meticulous grading process from vineyard to barrique to final blend.

Wine Range of Vasse Felix

The estate’s production is centred around Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, with a clear emphasis on varietal clarity, regional integrity, and textural elegance. The portfolio is structured into four quality tiers:

  • Icon WinesTom Cullity, the pinnacle of the estate’s red winemaking, sourced from the original 1967 vines and Heytesbury Chardonnay, an internationally acclaimed, complex white wine of fine tension and mineral drive.
  • Premier Range: Classic expressions of Margaret River varietals, highlighting the purity of fruit and vineyard-driven character. Includes Premier Cabernet Sauvignon and Premier Chardonnay.
  • Filius Range: A more approachable and youthful interpretation of the house style, showcasing vibrancy and freshness across Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc–Semillon blends.
  • Classic Range: Everyday wines crafted with the same attention to detail and philosophy as the estate’s top-tier offerings.

Did you know?

The estate's name is a nod to local history: “Vasse” honours French sailor Thomas Vasse, who was lost at sea nearby in 1801, while “Felix” means happy or fortunate in Latin. Fittingly, Jancis Robinson MW once described Margaret River as "the closest thing to paradise in any wine region I have visited", a sentiment embodied by Vasse Felix’s enduring commitment to beauty, balance, and place.

James Halliday (JH) : 99 Points (2018)
This wine is the benchmark of the latent power, grace and inherent balance of the 2018 vintage in Margaret River. Texturally similar to the classically sophisticated 2014 vintage, but with far greater density and weight. Here, the savoury tannins are countersunk into the fruit already: shapely, firm, chewy, malleable – everywhere and nowhere at once. Waves of blood plum, cassis, blackberry, pomegranate, juniper, raspberries, saltbush, bay leaf and salted red licorice crash against the rocks, as kelp, nori, iodine, red gravel and brine ride the smaller sets out the back. Sensational. Astounding. A wine for the ages. (7/2022)

Robert Parker (RP) : 99 Points (2018)
The 2018 vintage can comfortably be described as being one of the greatest, if not the greatest vintage in Margaret River's 55-year modern history (i.e., since 1967). When this 2018 Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec was released, it was both satisfying and terrifying. The former, because it confirmed everything I had suspected/hoped prior to its release. The latter because it would force me to put my neck on the line and give it the score I believe it deserves. Having seen it blind a number of times in esteemed international company, I am comfortable that this wine more than stands up alongside its counterparts from Bordeaux and Napa in the 2018 vintage. It is a marvelous example of Margaret River Cabernet, in that it offers us red raspberry, pomegranate, cassis and red licorice, alongside pink peppercorns, nori, sun-dried kelp, hints of iodine and earth, and all of it framed by ferrous tannins. It is fresh, it is structured, it is incredibly long. It will live forever.

James Suckling (JS) : 98 Points (2018)
A great edition of the top Cabernet blend from Vasse Felix, this has a lot of power and depth. The aromas run from red to blue and dark berries with a leafy edge and attractive, fresh florals. The palate has a core of blue-toned fruit flavor that drives so deep, with a helix-like interplay of acidity and tannin. Impressive. Drink over the next decade or more.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 97 Points (2018)
Reminiscent of Margaret River’s towering eucalyptus, marri flow- ers, dusty red earth and salty Indian Ocean breeze. red currant and black cherry swirl with graphite, iodine, savory spice and dried violets. Powerful and poised, with downright sexy tannins that cradle the fruit rather than cinch it.

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2018)
A deep, rich, sensual nose and attack reflects a long, dry, warm Indian summer which extended the ripening period. Reveals dark chocolate, balsamic and delicious vibrato cigar box layers to the plush blackcurrant, black and blue berry fruit. Green coffee bean, sage, terracotta, cooler graphite and cut-finger nuances build. Dynamic, lacy tannins and mineral acidity contain and extend the fruit on a long, brooding finish. (5/2022)

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 94 Points (2018)
There’s a brilliant freshness to the bold red fruit of this wine, an oceanic note of the cool winds through the jarrah forests west of Caves Road. It’s a blend of cabernet sauvignon and malbec, most all of the fruit from the original vines at the Wilyabrup blocks Tom Cullity established in 1967. The alcohol in the wine reads as earthy spice, elevating the cassis and forest-berry notes, taking the soft fullness of fruit toward a tight, focused clarity that lasts.
