Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Bright pale straw colour.
Nose: An open fragrant perfume reminiscent of apple pie, delicate spice and milk arrowroot biscuits. Perfectly ripe notes of lemon, peach and mango mingle with light pear and a hint of white pepper.
Palate: A very comfortable mouthfeel with fleshy softness, fruit sweetness and full body tempered by a beautiful fresh acid crunch toward the finish. Almost a mango-like texture with a tangy twist, fused with slightly undercooked pie crust.

James Suckling (JS) : 92 Points (2019)
Such juicy and attractive, ripe stone fruit rules the nose with an edge of mineral and flint. The palate is mouthwateringly juicy and offers a wealth of peach, pear and mango flavor, wrapped up in a dry, crisp finish. Drink now. Screw cap.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 91 Points (2018)
Virginia Willcock selects less concentrated lots of chardonnay from Vasse Felix’s estate vineyards for Filius, fermenting them with ambient yeasts and limiting the new oak. Her 2018 is cool and zesty, the juicy nectarine flavors integrated with a little spice from oak tannins and lasting with leesy length. Pour it with a crayfish boil.

Decanter (DCT) : 91 Points (2018)
Vasse Felix was the first vineyard and winery founded in Margaret River, in 1967. Heytesbury Chardonnay is its icon white (£60), Premier the mid-tier, and its ‘son’ (Filius) is modestly priced, yet delivers a taste of that famous house style: buttery oak, apple crumble, sweet peach, vibrant acidity. Hay Shed Hill and Xanadu’s Estate Chardonnay are other quality buys at a similar price.

Robert Parker (RP) : 88 Points (2018)
Crystalline-pure melon and pineapple notes appear on the nose of the 2018 Filius Chardonnay. Medium-bodied, crisp and direct, it's streamlined on the palate, with distinct citrus and chalk notes on the finish.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2017)
Simultaneously supple and juicy in texture, with an elegant, fresh expression of apple, lemon and melon flavors that are vibrant, intense and mouthwatering. Subtle white pepper and green tea notes linger in the background. Drink now through 2025.

James Halliday (JH) : 90 Points (2016)
Straw-green; an impressive wine that is the bottom rung of a three-tier classification by Vasse Felix. It has abundant, clear-cut varietal character, exactly what you would expect from alcohol at this level. Oak has had a minimal role, helping texture rather than flavour.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 89 Points (2016)
As the entry-level Chardonnay from one of Margaret River's most highly lauded producers, this has a creamy opulence to it, with notes of buttercups, lemon drops and toasty oak. The palate is of medium weight, with a viscous texture and a good lick of acidity to keep things fresh, but the oak is a little flashy, particularly on the finish.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2014)
Light, green-tinged yellow. Aromas of fresh melon, pear and Meyer lemon, with subtle hints of toasty lees and fennel emerging with air. Juicy and seamless on the palate, with pliant orchard and pit fruit flavors tightened and lifted by zesty acidity. Finishes sappy and quite long, with an echo of citrus fruits adding bite and focus.

Vasse Felix, Margaret River's founding wine estate, was established by Dr Thomas Brendan Cullity in 1967. Among his first plantings were Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec vines, from which he produced the estate’s first red wine. The Tom Cullity descends from these original vines and represents the pinnacle of Vasse Felix.
