More information on wine critics and ratings

The unique ‘maceration carbonique’ fermentation, which enhances the fruit and floral aromas of the wine, was used for 45% of the grapes. The other 55% received a traditional, warm, red wine fermentation. The resulting wines completed their malolactic fermentation and were matured for 11 weeks in seasoned French oak barrels, before blending and bottling.

Tasting Notes:
Deep, brilliant crimson with a cherry-red edge, Estate Vineyards Gamay Noir sparkles with lifted candy-apple, strawberry and star anise on the nose. Soft and luscious, the palate overflows with crushed red summer fruit, wild raspberry and cherry. Hints of rosewater and aniseed culminate in this wine’s sumptuous finish. Refreshing in its appeal, beguiling in its detail, Estate Vineyards Gamay Noir is New Zealand Gamay Noir par excellence – the result of an incredible vintage, this is the best we have made.

Today, the estate comprises 250ha, with 150ha under vine, and produces 40000 cases exclusively from these plantings. Two thirds of the production is Cabernets/Merlot, Chardonnay and Syrah. Te Mata Estate Winery originated as part of Te Mata Station, a large pastoral land-holding established by English immigrant John Chambers in 1854. John's third son, Bernard had the original vision for wine production and planted grape vines on three parcels of hillside land above the homestead,… Read more

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2020)
Te Mata’s bright, cherry-hued Gamay makes for a refreshing change from its more polished, structured, traditionally made reds. Aromas of fresh red currants and blueberries are followed by savory spice and autumnal woodsy notes like damp leaves, sap and wet stones. There’s lovely tension and freshness on the palate, which is silky but cinched by sappy tannins. There’s a medicinal bitters bite at the finish. Drink now.

Robert Parker (RP) : 90 Points (2018)
A blend of fruit from the Woodthorpe Vineyard and Dartmoor Valley, the 2018 Estate Vineyards Gamay Noir shows a return to form for this producer's Gamay. Made with 50% whole clusters and aged only three months in older oak, it's bursting with ripe raspberries and cherries. There's a slightly sappy, savory element from the stems in this medium-bodied charmer, which finishes juicy and fresh. Fun, quaffable and pleasure-giving, it should be enjoyed over the next couple of years.

James Suckling (JS) : 90 Points (2017)
A bright strawberry-infused gamay with plenty of attractive fresh friut fragrance, it has a lightness and crunchy, open weave appeal, all fun, no fuss. Screwcap. Drink now.
