Coleraine is New Zealand’s most famous red wine.  First produced in 1982, this classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc displays the concentration, complexity and elegance found in the world’s finest wines.

Always floral, always concentrated, always poised – Coleraine is galaxy-dark with flashes of magenta and brilliant purple. Alive with charm, texture and energy, this is a multi-generational wine of immense cellaring potential.

Today, the estate comprises 250ha, with 150ha under vine, and produces 40000 cases exclusively from these plantings. Two thirds of the production is Cabernets/Merlot, Chardonnay and Syrah. Te Mata Estate Winery originated as part of Te Mata Station, a large pastoral land-holding established by English immigrant John Chambers in 1854. John's third son, Bernard had the original vision for wine production and planted grape vines on three parcels of hillside land above the homestead,… Read more

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 98 Points (2018)
Bright, youthful blended red of Cabernet Sauvignon (52%), Merlot (33%) and Cabernet Franc (15%). This is classic Coleraine with cassis, cedar, floral, blueberry, a suggestion of wood-smoke, anise and spicy oak flavours. Terrific depth and an exquisite balance between fruit sweetness and acid/tannin structure. It will be a long-distance runner. (3/2020)

James Suckling (JS) : 97 Points (2018)
A very concentrated nose with impressively rich blackberry, raspberry and dark-plum aromas. Dark chocolate, violet and cedary oak here, too. Very youthful. The palate has a very rich, intense and plush feel with fresh acidity and depth, amid long, fine and compressed tannins. Good freshness and concentration. Drink or hold.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 96 Points (2018)
Te Mata’s top wine comes mostly from the Havelock Hills, the first legally protected vineyards in New Zealand. This vintage is a strong one, showcasing the power and ageability of a world class red with the precision and linearity of this traditional estate. Notes of black currant, plum, black olive, baking spice, dried green herbs and vanillin and chocolaty oak are present throughout. Chalky tannins are taut and powerful but wellintegrated, hinting at a long life ahead. Drink 2022– 2040.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2018)
The 2018 Coleraine (the current release) is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. It's fresh and floral on the nose, with hints of green herbs and dark chocolate both complementing vibrant cassis fruit. Medium to full-bodied, it's richly textured and actually a bit chunky in its youth, possessing a slight excess of flesh that will require age to ameliorate. Of course, that also makes it relatively approachable young, for folks who don't mind a bit of tannin. Long and concentrated on the finish, this looks to be another very successful vintage of Coleraine.

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2016)
Probably New Zealand’s most ageworthy red. Set up by the Buck family in 1974, today Nick Buck maintains its tradition of precision Bordeaux-style winemaking. With time this will blossom into a great Pauillac equivalent. 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Drinking Window 2019 - 2035 (AH) (1/2019)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2014)
Dark, ruby-tinged red. Perfumed scents of cassis, crushed raspberry, bay leaf, tobacco leaf and curry powder. Boasts excellent intensity and thrust but still youthfully dumb and clenched in the mid-palate. But this wine boasts terrific depth to its flavors of dark berries, flowers and spices. With a firm spine of ripe tannins, this wine has the structure to support a long and graceful evolution in bottle. 91+ (ST) (5/2016)
