More information on wine critics and ratings
“In your glass the wine introduces itself with enticing aromas of red and black fruit, baking spice, dark violets, lavender, wet stone, and cinnamon. The promise of all that delicious complexity is fulfilled with a racy Cabernet Sauvignon full of energy – juicy flavors of red plum, cherry, cassis, black tea, and cola – all beautifully packaged together with ripe, bright tannins made for right-now enjoyment as well as long term aging in your cellar.”
— Shafer winemaker Elias Fernandez

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 96 Points (2019)
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is a gem of a wine that readers will love to have in their cellars. Sweet cassis, violets, and graphite define the bulk of the aromas, and it’s a classic Napa Valley Cabernet on the palate with its full-bodied richness, velvety tannins, and opulent yet balanced style. A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot, raised 20 months in new barrels, it’s going to keep for a solid two decades. There are 9,000 cases of this beauty made. (5/2022)

Decanter (DCT) : 95 Points (2019)
Leading with red berry fruit marked by a minty freshness, espresso bean, cedar, and kirsch aromas. Medium to full-bodied, it envelops the palate with a panoply of brown spices, dried wild herbs, and spicy red berry fruit. Plush with silken tannins and a fantastic vein of minerality, finishing with minty chocolate flourishes. Aged 20 months, 100% new Allier and Tronçais barrels, includes a 2% splash of Petit Verdot. (JC) (2/2023)

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2019)
A perennial powerhouse, this wine includes 12% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Tight, tannic and brawny in style, it offers dense layers of rich earth, dried herb, soy and leather, with unmistakable muscularity that wraps itself around lushly dark, baked fruit. (VB) (9/2022)

James Suckling (JS) : 95 Points (2019)
Blackberries and blueberries with cherries, too. The palate is very polished and refined with fresh, velvety tannins that provide tension and verve. It’s long and vivid with polish and beauty. Drinkable now, but give it at least three or four years to soften. Better after 2026. (1/2022)

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 94 Points (2019)
Elias Fernandez focuses this wine on two estate vineyards, one at the base of the Stags Leap Escarpment, on hills surrounding the winery, plus the Borderline vineyard two miles south. His 2019 has a soil-driven scent, picking up on the rocky, volcanic scree that forms the base of these knolls. Yet, in the best tradition of Shafer cabernet, it follows a clean line, like a well-built rock wall, the wine’s flavors infused with black-currant ripeness and blueberry-skin darkness that keeps smoking up in the finish (the wine has consumed a substantial amount of new oak). This has the stamina to last for a decade or two. (JG) (12/2022)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2019)
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is such an elegant wine. Bright, red-toned fruit and effusive aromatics lend striking brilliance to a Cabernet that is gracious and light on its feet. The 2019 stands out for its freshness and red fruit profile. It is beautifully done. One Point Five remains one of Napa Valley's little hidden gems; a wine that is seldom talked about in a discussion of the very top bottlings, but a Cabernet that never disappoints. Drink: 2024-2034. (AG) (1/2022)

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2019)
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it delivers bright, vibrant notes of cassis, cedar, Marmite toast and black raspberries with hints of bay leaves and tilled earth in the background. The palate is full-bodied, rich and plush, featuring a lively backbone and a long finish that displays wonderful purity and precision.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2018)
Quite lush in feel, with creamy waves of plum sauce, melted black licorice, açaí berry reduction and sweet toast rolling through, laced with subtle alder and bay leaf notes and ending with a sanguine hint amid the fruit. The buried structure will carry this in the cellar as well.
