Region and Vineyards

The Barolo DOCG is nestled in the heart of Piedmont, Italy, one of the country's most esteemed wine regions. Known for producing Nebbiolo wines of unparalleled depth and longevity, Barolo's hills and soils play a key role in shaping the complexity of these wines. The terroir is characterized by calcareous marl soils and steep slopes, which combine to create wines with robust structure and vibrant acidity. This terroir is ideal for Nebbiolo, a late-ripening grape that requires specific climatic conditions to achieve full maturity. The 2019 vintage offered a growing season with ideal temperature swings in August, preserving the fruit's acidity while allowing rich flavor development.

The 2019 vintage in Barolo saw a challenging but rewarding climate. Winter started with limited rainfall and mild temperatures, prompting early vine growth. However, spring brought cool, rainy weather, reducing yields and delaying flowering. A warm, dry June allowed for optimal canopy development, while cool nights in August contributed to balanced ripening. Harvest took place between October 10 and October 19, with low yields that concentrated the flavors in the remaining fruit. This meticulous vineyard management reflects Prunotto's commitment to preserving the integrity of the Barolo terroir in every bottle.

Winemaking

The Prunotto Barolo 2019 is crafted with a traditional approach that highlights the essence of Nebbiolo. After harvesting, the grapes were carefully destemmed and crushed before undergoing a maceration period of approximately 8 days on the skins, with the temperature controlled to reach a maximum of 30°C (86°F). This process allows for a delicate extraction of tannins and color, essential for Barolo's iconic structure and aging potential. Malolactic fermentation was completed before the end of winter, adding smoothness and a balanced mouthfeel to the wine.

The wine was then aged for at least 18 months in large oak barrels of various capacities. This extended period of maturation in oak allows the wine to develop complexity and soften its tannic structure, while also enhancing the aromas and depth typical of traditional Barolo. Prunotto's use of large oak barrels ensures that the oak influence is subtle, preserving the natural flavors and structure of Nebbiolo while allowing for elegant aging.

  • Aroma: Elegant and expressive, with notes of delicate spices, floral hints, and small red fruits that showcase Nebbiolo's aromatic potential.
  • Palate: Balanced and intense, with soft, silky tannins that give way to a rich, persistent finish.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Braised beef with truffle: Complements the earthy, complex flavors of the wine.
  • Pasta with wild boar ragu: The wine's structure enhances the bold flavors of game meat.
  • Risotto with porcini mushrooms: The richness of the risotto pairs harmoniously with the wine's tannins and red fruit notes.
  • Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano: The wine's persistent finish and refined tannins enhance the cheese's nutty complexity.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2020)
This program appears to have gone through quite a dramatic transformation over the past years, passing from more extracted wines to much lighter and brighter expressions instead. The Prunotto 2020 Barolo is a big release of nearly 134,000 bottles, with fruit sourced from a variety of vineyards. More than its DNA, however, it's the style of the wine that has taken a radical departure. This Barolo shows a light ruby color with a fragrant bouquet focused mostly but not only on violets and lilacs; red fruits follow with hints of aniseed and crushed stone. It's easy-drinking, but it also shows new purpose, and that's not an easy feat for a production this large. (ML)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2020)
Macerated cherry, strawberry and menthol flavors mark this supple red. Balanced and lively, with a light, chalky feel on the finish. In the end, this is savory. Best from 2026 through 2042.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 90 Points (2020)
The 2020 Barolo is a lovely entry-level offering from Prunotto. Medium in body and ethereal, the 2020 shows the more gracious, understated side of Barolo off to great effect. Crushed flowers, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, herbs and citrus peel are beautifully lifted (AG)
