Region and Vineyards

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most revered vineyards of the Middle Mosel, rising dramatically above the village of Wehlen on slopes that reach gradients of approximately 70%. Its south to south-west exposure captures valuable sunlight in this cool, northerly climate, encouraging slow, even ripening while preserving Riesling's naturally vivid acidity.

The vineyard is dominated by deeply weathered Devonian blue-grey slate, which stores daytime warmth and provides excellent drainage. Joh. Jos. Prüm owns approximately 5 hectares within the site, whose name refers to the sundial erected by family ancestor Jodocus Prüm in 1842. These conditions typically produce Rieslings of exceptional perfume, bright stone-fruit character, fine mineral definition and remarkable longevity. The 2024 growing season yielded a particularly pure, animated expression, with sweetness appearing secondary to freshness, salinity and poised acidity.

Winemaking

Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2024 is made from 100% Riesling, harvested from the estate's parcels within this celebrated steep-slope vineyard. The Kabinett designation reflects naturally ripe grapes picked with sufficient sugar concentration to produce delicately sweet wine while retaining the light body and refreshing acidity traditionally associated with the style.

Fermentation proceeds slowly with indigenous yeasts in traditional Mosel Fuder casks, large, seasoned oak vessels that contribute texture without imparting obvious new-oak flavour. Fermentation is arrested naturally before all grape sugar is converted into alcohol, leaving residual sweetness balanced by the wine's vibrant acidity. The wine subsequently remains in cask on its fine lees for approximately eight to ten months before bottling, although exact maturation can vary according to the evolution of each individual lot. This restrained approach preserves aromatic purity, delicate fruit and the transparent expression of Wehlener Sonnenuhr's slate soils.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Pale lemon with youthful green reflections and brilliant clarity.
  • Aroma: Elegant and expressive, opening with honeysuckle, elderflower and delicate garden herbs before revealing white peach, nectarine, pear and mandarin. Subtle reduction and cool crushed-slate nuances add complexity.
  • Palate: Featherlight yet succulent, with juicy pear, peach and mandarin framed by vibrant, silky acidity. Gentle residual sweetness is seamlessly integrated, while creamy fruit, saline minerality and citrus zest lead into a long, precise finish.

Did You Know?

The sundial that gives Wehlener Sonnenuhr its name was installed in 1842 by Jodocus Prüm, an ancestor of the present family. It helped vineyard workers tell the time on this exceptionally steep Mosel slope.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Thai green curry: The wine's gentle sweetness softens chilli heat, while its bright acidity refreshes the palate between mouthfuls of coconut-rich sauce.
  • Pork tenderloin with apple: Ripe orchard-fruit flavours echo the apple accompaniment, while the wine's acidity balances the richness of the pork.
  • Seared scallops with citrus butter: Delicate sweetness complements the scallops, while lemon-lime freshness cuts through the butter and highlights their natural salinity.
  • Young goat's cheese with pear: The wine's acidity lifts the creamy cheese, while its pear and floral notes create a harmonious aromatic connection.

Manfred is certainly one of the world's more eccentric wine producers and a tasting in his drawing room with him is always enjoyable and entertaining.

In the Sonnenuhr of Wehlen he owns a portion of one of the Mittel Mosel's top vineyards. Its steep south-facing dark slate slopes tend to result in deeply flavoured, mineral yet rich and smoky wines.

In addition, he manipulates some plots in the next door Himmelreich of Graacher which produces engaging wines with fresh acidities that are slightly softer and earlier maturing.

These are unashamedly classic, exciting and long-lived wines produced predominantly in stainless tanks to avoid the addition of too much sulphur, though a small proportion of wooden casks are retained, however, depending on the vintage.

They are bottled later than most Mosel and often take a few years in bottle before showing the true character, but patience will be rewarded!

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 94 Points (2024)
The 2024 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett opens with subtle hints of creamy woodruff, candied angelica and wet slate. The palate is lightness itself, like a veil of scented fruit referencing green apple, supple, sweet but tart citrus, like juicy, pale pomelo, rounded out with a touch of white peach. It is wonderfully serene, cooling, elegant and precise. (Off-dry)

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2024)
Wonderfully expressive nose of honeysuckle and fresh garden herbs. Juicy, light-bodied palate with creaminess, slatey minerality and very elegant acidity. Long, zesty finish with plenty of mandarin orange character.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2024)
Leans into its off-dry profile, with real concentration to the notes of pear, kumquat and lychee, which show impressive range and depth. Bitter herb and chalky mineral elements move through, with smoky petrol and flowers on the solid finish. Complex and long. Drink now through 2040.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2024)
The 2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett displays lovely fruit intensity with subtle earthy notes, floral nuances and a hint of reduction. Full-bodied, juicy and piquantly racy on the palate, this is a fresh, elegant and ever-light-footed Kabinett yet with a sensual, juicy character. This is AP 05 25. 8.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in March 2026.
