Our goal each year is to capture the vibrancy, energy and rare, chiseled red fruit quality that this site is capable of producing. We pick the Bodega Headlands Vineyard in multiple passes at the early edge of ripeness to produce a firmly structured wine that is distinguished by its complexity and intensity rather than any dimension of weight.

We preserve as many intact whole berries as possible throughout the fermentation process by using the bare minimum number of gentle punch downs. The temperature of the cap and of the fermenting juice is kept lower than our other bottlings in order to capture the high-toned, lifted aromatics and saline essence this site expresses. This gives the Bodega Headlands pinot noir the vivid aromatics we desire, along with a measure of elegance and grace.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 96 Points (2022)
The 2022 Pinot Noir Bodega Headlands Vineyard Cuvee Elizabeth is a bright ruby color, and the nose is ripe and expressively perfumed, spiced with black raspberries, cardamom, dark stones, and pine. The palate is medium-framed, with a ripe but compact feel, snappy and crisp, refined tannins, lifted acidity, and an attractive salty spice on the finish. It offers fantastic intensity as well as compact depth and complexity. It’s fabulous all around.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 95 Points (2022)
Full of alluring charm in the form of dried rose hip, rooibos tea, white pepper and cherry coulis notes that drive through, showing subtle but persistent underlying energy. Hibiscus and mulberry details add range and length alongside a flash of ocean breeze minerality.

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2022)
The 2022 Pinot Noir Bodega Headlands Vineyard Cuvée Elizabeth is deep and heady on the nose. Youthful pomegranate and rhubarb give way to cinnamon, red licorice, hibiscus and rooibos tea, plus the complex woodsy and spicy undertones characteristic of the Occidental wines. The palate offers concentration without weight, flooding the mouth with waves of crunchy, saline-laced red fruit. It’s structured by lacy tannins and vibrant acidity and has a long finish with a flourish of spicy accents. It will benefit from several years in the cellar.Rating: 95+

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 95 Points (2022)
Silky, aromatic and light on its feet, the 2022 Pinot Noir Bodega Headlands Vineyard Cuvée Elizabeth is a wine of exquisite finesse and understated beauty. Bright acids lift a core of gentle red/purplish fruit in this classy, polished Pinot from Occidental. All the elements are so well balanced.

Decanter (DCT) : 97 Points (2021)
Dry farming is always an option, even in hot vintages. In 2021, Occidental grew abundant canopies, and a cool September meant a more relaxing vintage. Everything is destemmed, tasted from bottled #1566. This wine is aromatically haunting with lots of high-tone red fruited character with wild violets, white pepper and turned soil. The gorgeous flavours of blueberries and wild green strawberries meld together for a well-knit palate, with elegant spices, clove, five spice and wild anise. Certified sustainable, all estate vineyards are a proprietary massale selection of mixed clones. (CP)

Burghound (BH) : 94 Points (2021)
Deep ruby color. A perfumed, elegant and wafting nose hints at the coolness of the vineyard yet the spicy black cherry and violet-scented aromas are fully ripe. There is excellent density to the beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that possess focused power on the impressively long, balanced and youthfully austere finale. This beauty is quite firmly structured though the abundant dry extract should permit it to age gracefully over the next decade and perhaps even a bit longer. In a word, excellent.
