Region and Vineyards

The Vigna Rionda cru in Serralunga d'Alba is widely recognised as one of the most prestigious sites in Barolo. Located at 300 metres altitude, it extends across 3 hectares with soils of mixed composition, marked by calcareous marl and clay. This unique balance of soil and microclimate produces wines of exceptional complexity and longevity. The exposure and natural drainage encourage steady ripening, ensuring Nebbiolo achieves its full aromatic and structural potential.

The vines, averaging up to 50 years of age, yield fruit of remarkable intensity and character. First bottled as a single vineyard by Massolino in 1982, Vigna Rionda has since become a touchstone for the style of Serralunga. Known for its combination of power and finesse, the vineyard consistently delivers Barolo of rare depth and elegance, with a capacity to age for decades.

Winemaking

Vigna Rionda Riserva follows traditional Barolo vinification, a hallmark of Massolino's philosophy. Grapes are vinified in large oak vats, undergoing long fermentation and maceration at about 30 °C. This extended process allows for the extraction of profound colour, fine-grained tannins, and layers of complex aromatics that form the foundation of the wine.

The maturation is equally patient: the wine spends up to 42 months in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by an additional 24 months of bottle ageing in the estate's cool, dark cellars. This lengthy elevage, unique within Massolino's range, ensures the Riserva enters the market only in its sixth year. The result is a wine that balances longevity and elegance, requiring patience but rewarding with unparalleled nuance.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Bright garnet red, vivid and transparent.
  • Aroma: Complex and enveloping, ranging from youthful notes of red fruits and flowers to evolved tones of tobacco, brushwood, and exotic spice.
  • Palate: Profoundly structured yet elegant, with power, length, and harmony. Firm tannins and vibrant acidity frame the fruit, while the finish is endlessly persistent, destined to evolve for decades.

Did you know?

Vigna Rionda is the only wine in the Massolino range released as a Riserva, held in the cellar for six years before release. Its reputation is so legendary that locals say something almost mystical happens on this hill, endowing the wines with a singular harmony that makes them impossible to imitate.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Braised beef in Barolo: The wine's structure mirrors the depth of this regional classic.
  • Roast lamb with rosemary and garlic: Herbal notes resonate with Nebbiolo's savoury elegance.
  • Wild boar ragù with pappardelle: The power and complexity of the cru complement gamey richness.
  • Mature cheeses such as Castelmagno or Parmigiano Reggiano: Their crystalline textures soften the tannic grip and highlight the wine's lingering finish.

History of Massolino

Founded in 1896 by Giovanni Massolino, the estate is one of the oldest and most iconic producers in Serralunga d'Alba, a commune revered for yielding the most powerful and long-lived Barolos. Giovanni, a pioneer for his time, was instrumental in introducing electricity to the village—an emblem of his progressive mindset, which would become a family trait.

In 1934, the estate joined the Consorzio per la Tutela del Barolo e Barbaresco, further cementing its leadership in promoting the Langhe's quality standards. The third generation—Giovanni, Camilla, and Renato—deepened the estate's commitment to crus, acquiring premier vineyards in Margheria, Parafada, and later the legendary Vigna Rionda. The fourth generation, represented by Franco and Roberto Massolino, has expanded the estate's holdings beyond Barolo to include Barbaresco and Moscato d'Asti, while continuing to honour its deep family roots and winemaking identity.

Massolino has never strayed from its core philosophy: wines must reflect their place. This is done through meticulous farming, minimal intervention in the cellar, and aging choices that highlight Nebbiolo's noble austerity.

Region and Vineyards

Massolino is based in Serralunga d'Alba, a commune in Barolo renowned for producing structured, intense, and age-worthy wines, largely due to its compact marl and limestone-rich soils from the Lequio formation. The estate cultivates 43 hectares of vines, primarily Nebbiolo, but also Dolcetto, Barbera, Chardonnay, and Moscato.

The crown jewel of Massolino's vineyard holdings is the Vigna Rionda cru, one of Barolo's most storied sites. South-west facing at around 330 metres altitude, this vineyard is celebrated for its complexity, mineral depth, and longevity. Here, the wines exhibit the hallmark structure of Serralunga, but with more finesse and aromatic layering.

In addition to Vigna Rionda, Massolino also owns plots in Parafada (south-facing, producing rich and spicy Barolo), Margheria (a cooler site with finesse and floral lift), and Parussi, a notable site in Castiglione Falletto that brings balance and elegance to the lineup.

In recent years, Massolino expanded into Barbaresco, acquiring vines in the Albesani MGA, further diversifying its expressions of Nebbiolo while maintaining the estate's stylistic signature of clarity and terroir expression.

Wine Range of Massolino

Massolino's wine range showcases both indigenous Piedmontese grapes and international varieties with site precision. Their flagship wines are the Barolo classico, produced from multiple sites in Serralunga, and the single-vineyard Barolo crus, notably Vigna Rionda Riserva, Margheria, Parafada, and Parussi.

In addition to Nebbiolo-based wines, the estate crafts Barbera d'Alba Gisep, Langhe Nebbiolo, Dolcetto d'Alba, and Langhe Chardonnay. Its Moscato d'Asti from vines in Castiglione Tinella reflects aromatic charm and impeccable freshness.

The wines are known for their precision, purity, and age-worthiness, with a stylistic leaning toward traditional winemaking: long macerations, aging in large Slavonian oak casks, and restrained use of new oak to preserve varietal and terroir expression.

Did you know?

Massolino was one of the first producers in Serralunga to bottle Barolo from a single cru—Vigna Rionda—in 1982, long before single-vineyard wines became the norm. This early commitment to terroir expression anticipated a broader shift in Barolo's identity.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 98 Points (2017)
The 2017 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is flat out stunning. All the purest essence of Rionda comes through in a captivating Barolo that dazzles. Sweet red cherry fruit, kirsch, rose petal, licorice and blood orange are some of the many aromas and flavors that lift from the glass. Exotic and racy, the 2017 is a flat-out stunner. Now, for the million dollar question. Is it better than the 2016? Right now, I give an edge to the 2017 for its greater finesse and total sense of exotic beauty. But time will be the judge. I do look forward to tasting the 2016 and 2017 side by side!

Robert Parker (RP) : 97 Points (2017)
This is a gorgeous wine, and although it could stand more years of aging, you're not wrong to enjoy it in the near or medium term either. The 2017 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is packed tight with dark fruit, but it also shows a delicately savory edge with black licorice and rusty metal. The wine's intensity and the mouthfeel are sublime. Aging sees it go into botte for 36 months followed by another 36 months in bottle before its release.

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2017)
A traditional style with long fermentation and maceration in oak vats at a temperature of around 30°C, then aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for up to 42 months, followed by a further 24 months in the bottle. The nose is impressively fresh and vibrant, with a mix of white pepper, watermelon, wild strawberry and mint leaf. Less restrained than usual, on the palate the attack is firm, still young, and chewy, with brilliant long acidity and a cherry kernel finish. It deserves time to develop more complexity. James Suckling (JS) : 95 Points (2017)
Notes of wild strawberries and sour cherries with dried flowers and chocolate orange undertones. Medium- to full-bodied, very polished and fine-grained, showcasing subtle notes of red fruit with a mineral backbone. Even and balanced with a textural finish. Great to drink after 2025 but will age further.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 98 Points (2016)
Cherry, strawberry, rose, iron and menthol flavors highlight this supple red. There's plenty of backbone, and woodsy notes chime in, but this is more about the expressive berry fruit and elegant side of Barolo, ending with a terrific finish. Nonetheless, this will require several years for the tannins to be absorbed. (BS) (4/2022)

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 97 Points (2016)
Rose, ripe black-skinned berry and dark spice aromas mingle with camphor and forest floor on this full-bodied red. Combining structure and finesse, the firm palate delivers ripe Morello cherry, black raspberry and licorice. Bright acidity keeps it energized. Give it time to fully develop. (KO) (9/2022)
