Henschke’s Mount Edelstone Vineyard is located in the Eden Valley, a sub-region of the Barossa Valley in South Australia. Eden Valley is known for its cooler climate compared to the Barossa Valley floor, providing ideal conditions for growing high-quality Shiraz.

The Mount Edelstone Vineyard was established in 1912, making it one of the oldest single-vineyard Shiraz sites in Australia. The vineyard sits at an altitude of around 400 meters above sea level, which contributes to the unique microclimate and terroir of the wine. The soils are deep red-brown clay-loam over a limestone base, which helps to produce intensely flavored and structured wines.

Winemaking

The grapes for the Mount Edelstone Shiraz are handpicked and sorted before fermentation. Fermentation takes place in traditional open-top fermenters, and the wine is then aged in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak barrels for approximately 18 months.

This careful aging process adds complexity and depth to the wine, allowing it to develop its distinctive characteristics.

History of Henschke Estate

The Henschke estate was established in 1868 by Johann Christian Henschke, who emigrated from Silesia, Germany, to Australia in the mid-19th century. The winery gained early recognition for its quality wines and has been passed down through generations, each contributing to its legacy.

Cyril Henschke, representing the third generation, was a pioneering winemaker who introduced single-vineyard wines, including the now-iconic Hill of Grace in 1958. His innovative approach and commitment to quality set the foundation for the estate’s modern reputation.

Today, the estate is managed by fifth-generation winemakers Stephen and Prue Henschke, who continue to uphold the family’s traditions while integrating sustainable and biodynamic farming practices.
