Region and Vineyards

The Henschke Henry's Seven is sourced from multiple vineyards in the Eden Valley and Barossa Valley regions of the Barossa Zone in South Australia. This area is renowned for its ideal climatic conditions and diverse soils, which support the cultivation of high-quality grape varieties. The elevation of the vineyards, ranging from 274 to 500 meters, creates a favorable microclimate that allows for slow and balanced grape maturation, preserving their freshness and aromatic complexity.

The vineyard soils are composed of grey/brown clays, red-brown earth, and yellow sands over sandy loam with gravel and bedrock, providing excellent drainage and optimal conditions for viticulture. This soil diversity contributes to the richness and complexity of the wines produced, allowing the grape varieties to express themselves fully. The viticultural practices are meticulously managed, adhering to sustainable principles to ensure the health of the vines and the quality of the grapes.

Winemaking

Henry's Seven is a blend of 72% Shiraz, 15% Grenache, 11% Mataro, and 2% Viognier. The distinctive winemaking process includes co-fermenting the Viognier with Shiraz, which imparts a unique aromatic dimension and silky texture to the wine. The Grenache and Mataro are fermented separately in traditional open-top concrete tanks, allowing for gentle and even extraction of aromas and tannins.

After fermentation, the wine undergoes a full malolactic fermentation, which softens the acidity and enhances the texture. The wine is then aged for 8 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads, allowing the flavors to integrate and the tannins to harmonize. This carefully controlled aging process results in a wine of great finesse and complexity, ready for enjoyment upon bottling.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep crimson with violet hues.
  • Aroma: Fragrant with aromas of raspberry, plum, and boysenberry, accompanied by notes of sage, black pepper, mace, and cocoa, with floral hints of vanilla flower.
  • Palate: Rich and supple, with flavors of dark plum, cherry, and crushed blackberry, balanced by vibrant acidity and fine, savory tannins leading to a long, peppery finish.

Did you know?

This wine pays tribute to Henry Evans, who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. Quickly recognized for producing the best wines in the southern colony, his legacy was interrupted after his death in 1868 when his widow, Sarah, closed the estate and uprooted the vines due to her temperance convictions. This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia during the early days of viticulture, reflecting the history, religion, and culture of the Barossa.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Grilled Ribeye Steak: The richness of the grilled red meat and smoky flavors perfectly complement the wine's tannic structure and spicy aromas.
  • Cassoulet Toulousain: This traditional French dish of white beans and confit meats finds an excellent partner in Henry's Seven, whose vibrant acidity and fine tannins balance the richness of the cassoulet.
  • Seafood and Chorizo Paella: The complex flavors of paella, with its seafood and spicy chorizo, harmonize beautifully with the wine's red and black fruit notes.
  • Eggplant Parmigiana: This Italian dish of eggplant, tomato, and melted cheese is enhanced by the plum, cherry, and peppery nuances of Henry's Seven.

History of Henschke Estate

The Henschke estate was established in 1868 by Johann Christian Henschke, who emigrated from Silesia, Germany, to Australia in the mid-19th century. The winery gained early recognition for its quality wines and has been passed down through generations, each contributing to its legacy.

Cyril Henschke, representing the third generation, was a pioneering winemaker who introduced single-vineyard wines, including the now-iconic Hill of Grace in 1958. His innovative approach and commitment to quality set the foundation for the estate’s modern reputation.

Today, the estate is managed by fifth-generation winemakers Stephen and Prue Henschke, who continue to uphold the family’s traditions while integrating sustainable and biodynamic farming practices. Under their leadership, Henschke has maintained its status as one of Australia’s premier wine producers, celebrated globally for its exceptional wines.

Region and Vineyards

The Henschke vineyards are located primarily in the Eden Valley, with some holdings in the Barossa Valley. The Eden Valley's elevation and cooler climate provide ideal conditions for growing premium grape varieties, particularly Shiraz, Riesling, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The soils in this region are diverse, ranging from sandy loam over clay to rocky schist, contributing to the complexity and unique character of the wines.

The Hill of Grace vineyard is perhaps the most famous, featuring some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world, planted in the 1860s. These ancient, dry-grown vines produce grapes of remarkable depth and intensity, forming the backbone of Henschke’s flagship wine.

Other notable vineyards include Mount Edelstone, renowned for its Shiraz, and Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills, known for its cool-climate varieties.

Wine Range

Henschke offers a diverse range of wines, each reflecting the unique terroir of their respective vineyards. The portfolio includes:

  • Hill of Grace: An iconic single-vineyard Shiraz, known for its depth, complexity, and aging potential.
  • Mount Edelstone: Another distinguished Shiraz from ancient vines, celebrated for its rich flavors and elegant structure.
  • Keyneton Estate Euphonium: A harmonious blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, showcasing the synergy of Barossa and Eden Valley fruit.
  • Johann’s Garden: A tribute to the early German settlers, this blend of Grenache, Mataro, and Shiraz is vibrant and aromatic.
  • Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon: Named after Cyril Henschke, this wine exemplifies the excellence of Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • Tilly’s Vineyard: A crisp and refreshing white blend, highlighting the diversity of the Henschke vineyards.

Did you know?

The Hill of Grace vineyard, located opposite the historic Gnadenberg Church, draws its name from the German term Gnadenberg, meaning "Hill of Grace." This vineyard, with vines over 150 years old, remains ungrafted and is one of the few pre-phylloxera vineyards in the world. The Henschke family’s dedication to preserving these ancient vines showcases their commitment to heritage and excellence in winemaking.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2022)
The 2022 Henry's Seven leads with a vibrant core of raspberry seed and bramble, five spice and blood plum skin. In the mouth, the fruit is supple and spicy and expounds a brilliant clarity of tannin. Ductile, whippy and delicious, it has raspberry leaf tea and rose petals to close. There are also notes of pink peppercorns, as per usual. This is a gorgeous wine.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2022)
A southern Rhone blend, infused with a dollop of viognier. Scents of purple pastille, raspberry bon-bon, rose water and eucalyptus, quintessentially Australian. The tannins, finely wrought. The oak, embedded nicely. This is a large-framed wine of impressive freshness, if not a slightly drying finish.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2021)
From an excellent vintage, this 20th anniversary bottling of Henry’s Seven is a beauty and is comparatively affordable to boot. It offers layers of winter-warming aromas, from cherry and raspberry compote to savory, ground-pepper spice and toasted vanilla bean. The palate shows lovely mouth-watering freshness and red berry tang amidst chiseled, textural tannins. A finessed and complete wine for drinking now, this should also evolve beautifully over the next several years.Editors' Choice
