James Suckling (JS) : 95 Points (2022)
What a complex and enticing nose this dry riesling has, with notes of lime, melon and a slew of Mediterranean herbs. Serious concentration is married to blade-runner lime, mint and wet-stone freshness at the very long finish.

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2022)
Coiled. That's what this 2022 Springvale Riesling is. It's like a compressed spring, waiting for release. The fruit is from the Springvale vineyard and shows just how GOOD Australian Riesling is. This is textural and tight, with springboards of fruit blossom, chalk, pith and zest queued up. This is a wine that needs some time to emerge from itself, but it promises to be a superstar: Grosset has managed to wedge in some restraint and some austerity into the folds of the voluminous Clare fruit. Yikes. Awesome. (EL) 95+

James Halliday (JH) : 95 Points (2022)
Certified organic and biodynamic. A high-tension, fragrant Springvale release. Bright, floral perfume of lime blossom, ozone, blackcurrant and green apple. A strong spectrum of citrus flavours are the currency here: lemon, lime and a squirt of pulpy grapefruit zing with a faintly yeasty, almond-like character to finish. Quiet complexity and vitality are writ large here. Excellent.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2018)
This vintage of Springvale is shining. Simultaneously delicate, dry and fruity, it sings bright tunes of lavender, lemon-lime, grapefruit, white peach, and touches of white spice. The palate feels like licking a lime Popsicle without the sweetness. It’s buoyed by tingly acidity, with a soft talc-like texture and bright citrus right to the end where the spice trickles onto the tongue at the very close. Bright, focused and mouthwatering, this is a joyful wine that drinks easily now but will gain tons more complexity with a decade or more of cellaring. Hudson Wine Brokers. Editors’ Choice

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2018)
Jeffrey Grosset followed the soil profile when he planted 15 acres of riesling in 2000 at Springvale, his highest altitude vineyard in Watervale. The vines grow in a thin layer of clay loam over shale and limestone, and, as they have matured, their roots have reached the slate bedrock. He farms the site organically, and rather than fertilizing the soil, he grows a mix of grass and clover between the rows. His 2018, a savory riesling with scents of white tea and roses, has cool citrus tension. A brothy richness works to broaden the flavors, though they remain youthfully constricted, the tight fruit and mineral notes continuing to develop long after each sip. Like Grosset’s best rieslings, this is a wine to cellar, allowing the flavors to develop. It should start to reach full expression around ten years from the vintage.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 89 Points (2017)
Shows a laser beam focus to the lemon, pear and mineral flavors, set on a smooth and juicy frame, with plenty of persistence and accents of white pepper on the finish. Drink now. 2,200 cases made.

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2015)
The Watervale sub-region’s generous ‘soft rock’ red loam over limestone translates into a more expressive, fruit-driven style. While Polish Hill builds on the finish, Springvale 2015 has classic Watervale intensity and attack, with pure lime and lifted kaffir lime. Now that the vines’ roots have hit a vein of slate, Springvale is firmer, more mineral than most, with chalky dry extract going through. Very incisive, long and lip-smacking.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5 Points (2013)
Tasted Sept '14 - Lovely race and minerals and chew. So serious! Dry and convincing. Pretty Germanic actually...
