Often described as one of Australia’s unsung heroes, Grenache is naturally lighter in colour than Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon but continually provides us with wonderful big fruit flavours. Yalumba is extremely fortunate to have access to some of the oldest Grenache vineyards in the Barossa –with fruit for this wine sourced from vines planted between 1898 and 1973.

To maximise our blending options, all batches of the Old Bush Vine Grenache are crushed as separate parcels to either 6 tonne static pumpover fermenters or 8 tonne open top stainless steel fermenters. An extended maturation helps to contribute an even greater complexity and individuality to the wine. The wine is then matured for 8 Months in 2 - 6 year old French, American & Hungarian
oak Hogsheads.

Tasting notes: The 2013 is a lively and expressive wine with layers of raspberry compote, cherry paté de fruit and Asian spices, with underlying hints of briar and stalk that help to maintain the wines freshness. The palate is medium weighted Grenache that is deliciously silky, balanced and structured with gorgeous clarity and precision.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2018)
Such clarity, purity and depth here. This is surely a benchmark for the band of pedigree Barossa grenache, delivered right on the apex of quality and value. Vibrant raspberries, cherries and red plums flood the nose and palate and the chassis of fruit-tannin is sleekly cut. Fresh, juicy resolve. Drink now. Screw cap.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2018)
The latest range in Yalumba’s vast array of wines, the Samuel’s Collection, includes this well-priced Grenache. It’s light bodied, gluggable and perfectly on trend. Bright and bouncy, it bursts with ripe red berries followed by dried leaf, green peppercorn and floral characters. The palate is equally dainty, with crunchy acidity, juicy fruit and soft herbal tannins—a straightforward but highly likable drop for drinking young.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2018)
Perfumed, with heady floral and baking spice aromas singing through to raspberry coulis and strawberry flavors, set on a smooth and seamless body. A hint of vanilla bean lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2034.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2016)
The Old Bush Vine range from Yalumba consistently turns out some of the greatest values from Australia, this latest grenache being one of them. It’s clean and bright; one taster described the taste as “the perfect parallel to the flavor of raspberries.” The structure is about floral delicacy rather than tannic power, a wine light enough to serve chilled. And it brings a range of different foods to mind as accompaniments, from chicken liver mousse to char-grilled sardines to a burger with tomatoes and pickled red onions.

James Halliday (JH) : 92 Points (2014)
The vines are 55-80yo. The colour is light but brilliant crimson; the use of French oak isn't at all obvious in this light-bodied, but highly focused wine, with spicy red fruits and confection kept to a minimum. It is absolutely ready to drink immediately to appreciate its perfume and freshness.

Robert Parker (RP) : 90+ Points (2014)
Pale garnet colored with a hint of purple, the 2014 Grenache Old Bush Vine offers enticing red cherry and raspberry preserves notes accented with suggestions of cinnamon stick, orange peel, red roses and white pepper. Medium-bodied and beautifully delicate in the mouth, it sure doesn't scrimp on the flavor, filling the palate with warm red berries and baking spice cushioned with soft tannins and finishing with great length.
