Region and Vineyards
The 2019 Director’s Cut Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted from a selection of premier vineyard sites across Alexander Valley, a renowned AVA in Sonoma County. This long, narrow valley encompasses a diversity of microclimates and soil types, from volcanic ash on the eastern slopes to gravelly alluvials on the valley floor. The cooler southern section benefits from coastal influence, preserving acidity and aromatics, while the warmer north allows for optimal ripening and tannin development.
Fruit was sourced from multiple sites to build a wine with complexity, balance, and character. The season began with cool conditions that slowed down ripening and enhanced fruit purity. A moderately warm summer followed, with few heat spikes, leading to even ripening and fully developed tannins. This thoughtful sourcing results in a Cabernet that expresses both power and elegance, hallmarks of the Alexander Valley terroir.
Winemaking
The 2019 blend is composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4.4% Petit Verdot, and 9.6% other red varietals, adding nuance and aromatic lift. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 24 months, including time in 50% new oak barrels, with 10% American oak included in the regimen. The extended aging provides structure, smooth integration of tannins, and a subtle infusion of spice and toast.
Numerous blending trials were conducted post-aging to achieve the desired balance and complexity. Each vineyard parcel was vinified and aged separately before final selection, allowing the winemaking team to compose a layered and cohesive blend that captures the breadth of Alexander Valley.

The Director’s Cut label is a tribute to Francis Ford Coppola’s cinematic heritage. The unique wraparound label is modeled after a Zoetrope strip, one of the earliest moving picture devices. Each vintage’s label showcases a different frame from Coppola’s personal Zoetrope collection, making every bottle a piece of storytelling history.
