Region and Vineyards

The Sonoma Coast is renowned for producing world-class Chardonnays thanks to its cool-climate conditions and coastal influences. This vintage benefitted from a warm summer, with an early start to harvest. The growing season saw a significant heat event in early September, accelerating ripening, followed by cooler conditions that allowed for optimal fruit maturity. The Sonoma Coast offers complex soils and cool ocean breezes, contributing to a long growing season that is ideal for cultivating high-quality Chardonnay.

Winemaking

The Decoy Limited Chardonnay is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes sourced from some of the best vineyards in the Sonoma Coast region. The wine was aged for 8 months in a combination of stainless steel and French oak barrels, with 30% new oak adding a subtle oak influence. To maintain vibrant acidity and freshness, only 30% malolactic fermentation was used, ensuring a clean and bright finish.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Pale golden yellow with bright clarity.
  • Aroma: Aromas of ripe Meyer lemon, white peach, and tangerine, with a hint of butterscotch and light oak spice.
  • Palate: Smooth and round on the palate, offering flavors of tropical fruit and stone fruit, balanced by lively acidity. The subtle oak and light malolactic fermentation add richness and complexity, leading to a long, clean finish.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 91 Points (2020)
Ripe pear and sweet honeysuckle scents play with this wine’s cool, zesty feel, pointing its acidity at the creamy richness of an oyster pan roast. Half of the wine ferments in French oak, half in stainless steel, sustaining the fruit’s briskness.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2019)
A soft, approachable white with a succulence on the palate, this offers notes of Meyer lemon, apple, peach and melon. It is fruity at its core, with rich underlying elements of butterscotch, baking spice and oak
