Region and Vineyards

Château Mouton Rothschild lies on the gravelly rise (“motte”) of northern Pauillac, where its 75-hectare vineyard benefits from a unique terroir of deep gravels layered over sand, marl, clay, and limestone. These soils provide exceptional drainage and thermal regulation, especially favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant variety in the estate’s vineyard.

In 2017, the Mouton vineyard was fortunate to escape the spring frost that severely impacted other parts of Bordeaux. The growing season was shaped by a dry spring, early budbreak, and a prolonged drought lasting until December. Despite a wet June, the summer remained moderately warm and dry, leading to small, concentrated berries with intense colour and flavour. Harvesting began on 7 September and ended on 29 September, marking an early and compact vintage, with 51% of the crop selected for the Grand Vin.

Winemaking

The final blend of Château Mouton Rothschild 2017 is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot—a Cabernet-dominant profile reflecting the variety’s excellence in the vintage. Fermentation was conducted in traditional 225-hL wooden vats, with maceration lasting 15 to 25 days. The wine was then aged for approximately 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels, reinforcing its structure and aromatic depth.

With an alcohol level of 13.1% and a pH of 3.75, the wine shows superb balance, energy, and longevity. Winemaker Philippe Dhalluin aimed for extended macerations at lower temperatures, promoting finesse over extraction—especially important in a vintage marked by heat and drought stress.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep garnet with dark purple reflections and vivid clarity.
  • Aroma: Expressive nose of cassis, crushed blackberry, graphite, cedar, and floral hints of violet and iris. Subtle notes of star anise, espresso, and cigar box unfold with aeration.
  • Palate: Medium to full-bodied with polished, fine-grained tannins. The attack is fresh and precise, followed by a dense, harmonious mid-palate of black fruits, licorice, and crushed stone. The finish is long and tightly wound, revealing depth, energy, and classic Pauillac minerality.

The label of Mouton 2017 features artwork by Annette Messager, a major French contemporary artist. Her piece, titled Hallelujah, is a celebration of vitality and creation—a poetic mirror to the challenges and triumphs of the 2017 vintage, and a tribute to Mouton’s eternal reinvention through art and nature.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Grilled ribeye with black pepper crust – matches the wine’s structure and graphite edge.
  • Venison with juniper berry sauce – complements the dark fruit and spice.
  • Roast duck breast with plum reduction – highlights the wine’s floral lift and silky tannins.
  • Aged Comté or Manchego curado – amplifies the wine’s mineral length and umami notes.

History of Château Mouton Rothschild

The estate’s origins trace back to the early 18th century, but its modern legacy began in 1853, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, from the English branch of the Rothschild family, purchased Château Brane-Mouton and renamed it Mouton Rothschild. Despite being excluded from the top tier of the 1855 Bordeaux Classification—ranked as a Second Growth—Mouton would famously defy this hierarchy.

It was under the leadership of Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902–1988) that Mouton’s status transformed. A bold and modernizing figure, Baron Philippe introduced several revolutionary changes to Bordeaux winemaking: in 1924, he was the first to bottle the wine entirely at the château (mise en bouteille au château), a now-standard practice. In 1945, he inaugurated the tradition of commissioning a contemporary artist to design each vintage’s label—a practice that continues today with works from the likes of Picasso, Miró, Warhol, and Koons.

After a decades-long campaign led by Baron Philippe, Château Mouton Rothschild was officially elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1973, the only revision ever made to the original 1855 Classification—a testament to its exceptional quality and the Rothschild family’s influence.

Today, the estate is managed by his daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild’s descendants, under the umbrella of Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A., with Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild playing a leading role in artistic and brand direction, and Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy serving as technical director since 2020.

Region and Vineyards

Château Mouton Rothschild is situated in Pauillac, in the northern Médoc on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The vineyard covers 75 hectares (185 acres) and sits atop a prominent gravelly rise (“motte”), which lends the estate its name (“Mouton” possibly deriving from the Old French motte, meaning hillock). The soils are composed of deep Günzian gravels with excellent drainage, laid over limestone, marl, sand, and clay substrata.

This exceptional terroir is ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up over 80% of the plantings, along with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The average vine age is over 50 years, and vine density is 8,500 vines per hectare, promoting low yields and high concentration. Each parcel is vinified separately, allowing precise expression of site and variety.

The estate is farmed sustainably, with increasing emphasis on biodiversity and soil health. The unique microclimate of the estate allows for consistent ripening, even in challenging vintages, and contributes to the distinctive minerality and structure of Mouton’s wines.

Wine Range of Château Mouton Rothschild

The flagship wine is Château Mouton Rothschild, a Premier Grand Cru Classé red wine, typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is aged for about 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels, and no detail is spared from vine to bottle. Mouton Rothschild is renowned for its depth, concentration, complex aromatics (graphite, blackcurrant, cedar, exotic spice), and extraordinary aging potential, with great vintages maturing gracefully over 40+ years.

Mouton Rothschild also produces:

  • Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild – the estate’s second wine, launched in 1993, made from younger vines and parcels not selected for the grand vin. It offers a more approachable expression of the estate’s character.
  • Aile d’Argent – a rare dry white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and occasionally Muscadelle, sourced from a small dedicated vineyard. Known for its finesse, freshness, and aging potential, it reflects Mouton’s savoir-faire in white winemaking.
  • Mouton Cadet – a widely distributed, branded wine originally created in 1930 by Baron Philippe as an accessible Bordeaux wine. It is no longer directly linked to the grand vin’s terroir but remains part of the broader Rothschild family wine portfolio.

Each vintage of the grand vin carries a bespoke label designed by a renowned contemporary artist, reinforcing the house’s fusion of art and viticulture. Mouton is not just a wine—it is a curated experience of heritage, luxury, and cultural expression.

Château Mouton Rothschild’s 1982 and 1986 vintages are considered among the greatest Bordeaux wines ever made. The 1982 vintage, in particular, helped cement the modern reputation of Bordeaux and was a favourite of critic Robert Parker, playing a pivotal role in his career and in Bordeaux’s commercial renaissance. Also, the museum at the château, the Musée du Vin dans l’Art, houses an extraordinary collection of wine-related art and artefacts from antiquity to modernity, symbolising the deep cultural dialogue between wine and civilization.

James Suckling (JS) : 98 Points (2017)
Extremely perfumed Mouton with currants and crushed berries. Hints of roses and other flowers. Tight and extremely refined with ultra-fine tannins and cool yet rich currant character. The center palate offers sweet cherries and hints of oak. Lightly sweet and sour. Fresh, balsamic note. It firms up at the end. Solid. A blend of 90% cabernet sauvignon, 9% merlot and 1% petit verdot.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 97 Points (2017)
A brick house Cabernet, featuring a thick sheath of warm ganache and smoldering tobacco over a core of well-steeped black currant, black fig and blackberry compote flavors. Cuts a wide and deep trench as it moves along, with loamy, tannic grip for ballast. Retains a well-buried inner purity that should blossom as this mellows in the cellar. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. *Collectible* (JM)

Robert Parker (RP) : 96+ Points (2017)
The 2017 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal notes of warm black plums, baked black cherries, kirsch and freshly crushed blackcurrants with hints of candied violets, cinnamon toast, Ceylon tea and pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, the palate is charged with amazing energy, featuring dynamic black and red fruits and loads of baking spice and mineral sparks, framed by ripe, fine-grained tannins and finishing long and fragrant. Given the intensity of fruit and structure, while this is a relatively elegant Mouton that will be approachable early on, I don’t see it as being short lived. It should give pleasure for a good 40+ years. (LPB) 96+

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2017)
Graphite, black chocolate, pencil lead, blackberry and liquorice. This is serious, not holding back on its confident sense of power and depth. 100% new oak coming through as toasted grilled almond aromatics, this has no issue with settling in for the long term and will deliver over the next two to three decades. Easy to love. (JA)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 96 Points (2017)
The 2017 Mouton-Rothschild is lucid in colour, quite deep like the Le Petit Mouton. It has a pixelated bouquet with precise blackberry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, the oak seamlessly integrated so that the aromatics have unerring focus. The palate is medium-bodied with a graphite-tinged entry that is actually reminiscent of Latour in many ways. This Mouton-Rothschild is all about finesse and poise, the acidity beautifully judged and with superb tension on the finish. One of the finest Left Bank wines of the vintage, there are few 2017s superior to this. (NM)

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 96 Points (2017)
The top 2017 Chateau Mouton Rothschild checks in as 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot that spent 18 months in new barrels. This rock star of a wine offers stunning notes of chocolately blackcurrants, toasted spice, and espresso roast, as well as loads of classic Pauillac lead pencil shavings and graphite nuances. It's another wine that starts out slowly yet builds incrementally on the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe, polished tannin, no hard edges, and a stunning sense of purity and elegance. Give bottles upwards of a decade and it will evolve for 30 years or more.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2017)
The hint of new wood still shows in the aroma of this wine. But on the palate, it has the richness and exuberance that comes with this great estate. Tannins show structure and intensity, bringing out the bold black fruits. Packed with freshness as well as structure, the wine will age well. *Cellar Selection* (RV)
