The grape variety used to make this wine is Malbec. It makes big, rich, dark wines. The flavours and aromas are plums, dark chocolate and blackberries with some spice and pepper as well.

Nicola Catena planted his first Malbec vineyards in Mendoza in 1902. Malbec had been a blending grape in Bordeaux, but Nicola suspected it would find its hidden splendor in the Argentine Andes. Fast forward sixty years and Nicola’s grandson Nicolas took the reigns of the family firm. The excellent and floral 2019 Catena Malbec shows the typicity of the grape, violets and red berries, and the freshness of the year. It has the textbook aromas and a soft and velvety mouthfeel, with very fine grainy tannins. 2.1 million bottles produced.

James Suckling (JS) : 91 Points (2016)

This is a firm and silky red with blueberry and blackberry character. Some stone, too. Medium body, fresh acidity and a juicy finish.

July 2017 - Stephen Tanzer -Healthy red-ruby. Inky aromas of blackberry, licorice and tar, with some leathery funkiness. Smooth and subtly sweet but with brisk acidity to frame its flavors of tart red berries. Finishes a bit unyielding, with firm tannins and good length. A taut and muscular red, with focused flavors of plum tart, dried cherry and dark currant, backed by firm acidity. Chocolate nib notes emerge on the finish. Drink now through 2019. 4,000 cases made.

Ripe borderline raisiny aromas include earth, cedar and graphite scents. This is concentrated, grabby and fully extracted. Flavors of jammy black fruits blend with spicy saucy notes prior to a finish with flavors of tomato, herbs, salt and gamy meat. Firm acidity guarantees this will last at least another five years before falling off.
