The Bründlmayer family owns 12 hectares right in the center of the Zöbinger Heiligenstein. 10.5 hectares are planted with Riesling, the remainder for experimental purposes with Cabernet (mostly Cabernet Franc).

From a geological point of view the Zöbinger Heiligenstein site is not only the oldest but probably also the most interesting on our estate: the soil consists of approximately 270 Mio years old Perm desert sandstone. The sediments contain volcanic inclusions and carbonized remains of primeval vegetation. The uniqueness of this soil, its perfect gradient and position (SW to SE in a climatic borderland) provide ideal preconditions for growing outstanding wines. During the day warm winds (often due to the effects of the Pannonian climate) mount along the site whereas by nightfall cool gusts from the north start blowing through the Kamp Valley and bring forward the aromatic expression of the grapes.

About 20% of our Heiligenstein vineyards are trained in a Lyre trellis system. The vine bifurcates in a way that the branches seem to reach to the heavens like sun-worshippers. This method doubles canopy exposure and favors aeration which improves photosynthesis and prevents dreaded fungus diseases. Yields are restricted by rigorous thinning and although harvest started late only healthy berries without botrytis were brought in. These techniques result in increasing the quality of grapes to show a similar intensity as those deriving from old vines.
We ferment the must in stainless steel at a temperature of 15 to 20° C. After fermentation, the wine matures on the lees till bottling in summer.

Tasting Note: A deep fragrance of passion fruit, yuzu citrus and peppermint radiates freshness and vitality and yet immediately drives deep. Highly elegant and distinguished, full of fruit charm and esprit, fills the mouth with bright aromas. Focused and complex all the way into the long finish. Extraordinary ageing potential.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2019)
In spite of the moderate alcohol content in this context, this is quite a substantial wine with a ton of depth. Still a bit shy on the nose with lots of dried and fresh herbs, this is much more suave on the palate, until you get to the tightly wound finish that’s chock full of minerals. Better after 2020.

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2018)
rom 40-year-old vines trained in the lyra system, Bründlmayer's 2018 Riesling Zöbinger Ried Heiligenstein Lyra 1ÖTW is a true challenge at this stage, young and tight as it is. Pure, clear, fresh, precise and deeply mineral on the concentrated, lemon-scented and coolish/earthy nose, with its notes of crushed herbs, stones and ripe (white) stone fruits, this is a full-bodied, intense, round and elegant Heiligenstein with freshness, crystalline acidity and a tight structure that gives lots of tension but keeps the finesse and elegance. The finish is highly promising in its dense and concentrated, only rudimental juicy character, which is as tight and tensioned as only a very few whites from Lower Austria are. In its unapproachable but promising character, this Heiligenstein Riesling reminds me of the great South Styrian wines from Armin Tement, even though the terroir and grape variety are completely different. Although I tasted this in July 2019 and several times and from different glasses in October, it's still hard to rate this wine, which is possibly one of the greatest Heiligensteins in the era of Willy Bründlmayer. Rating: 95+

A smoky touch of reduction still hovers on the nose of this wine. Underneath, apple freshness with an earthy, leesy touch and lots of lemon notes spreads across the linear palate. This needs time to unfurl but will do so beautifully. The finish is dry and long and has a wonderfully pure, almost transcendent lemon note. Drink 2020–2030.

Well matured, green walnut, elder flowers and citrus fruit, some cereals, nuts and cornflakes, very dry and fresh with quite some body and structure, also hints of leafy and peppery spice, rye bread and malt. A light bouquet of fresh green grapes, pome and stone fruit, classic Kamptal loss type with some mineral backbone mouthwatering finish.

A rich and still juvenile bouquet of hay & honey blossoms, melon, yellow fruit with subtle exotic tones, as well as apple and citrus peel, followed by a whiff of peppery and toasty spice, at first fresh and dry but very sappy, with a creamy texture, almost rich, very complex and detailed, i.e. blossom honey, freshly cut citrus, apple and stone fruit, nicely contoured & firmly interwoven, with a long and spicy finish.

Citrus peel, white flowers, stone fruit and gooseberry dominate the graceful aromatic arc, delicate and bright fruit nuances on the palate, dry, fresh and pure with more yellow fruit and great acidity to match leading to a mineral and slightly spicy finish.

Draws a broad arc that leads from hazel leaves over fully ripe apricot to bergamot orange. Crystal clear and multi-layered, very distinguished and with deep intensity that is still difficult to grasp. Chocolatey fullness and slowly fading oak tannins, but despite all its strength, finesse always sets the tone. A Grüner Veltliner that inspires dreams but shall require time.
