“Alte Reben” means “old vines” and designates a wine sourced from renowned vineyards, all situated around Langenlois and its plants averaging 45 years. So, here we are speaking of an “Ortswein”, a very fine “local wine” in a reserve style. (On a Burgundy label this level of quality would be expressed by “Village Vielles Vignes”). Older vines are less productive, forming fewer and smaller grapes which then profit from a well-developed root system, reaching deeply into the ground. “Alte Reben” supply their fruit easier with water and potent nourishment. As a consequence, wines of these vineyards can be extremely flavorful and concentrated.

Grapes were harvested parcel by parcel throughout October with a meticulous hand selection. The must was partly fermented in used Austrian oak barrels as well as in stainless steel tanks and was finally racked into big oak casks for further maturation.

Tasting Note: A rich and still juvenile bouquet of hay & honey blossoms, melon, yellow fruit with subtle exotic tones, as well as apple and citrus peel, followed by a whiff of peppery and toasty spice, at first fresh and dry but very sappy, with a creamy texture, almost rich, very complex and detailed, i.e. blossom honey, freshly cut citrus, apple and stone fruit, nicely contoured & firmly interwoven, with a long and spicy finish.

Tasted as a sample in June 2017, the 2016 Langenlois Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben is from 40+-year-old vines, mainly in the Spiegel and Käferberg. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in 2,500-liter Austrian oak barrels until the summer of 2017, this is a pure, bone dry, fresh and firmly structured Grüner Veltliner with remarkable tannins and stimulating salinity in the finish. It is a Burgundian Veltiner with great purity and freshness. It was harvested in the second and third week of October in the stop-and-go modus, as Andreas Wickhoff explains.Rating: (91-93)

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2015)
Funky yeast still holds sway on the nose. Underneath that are notions of ripe juicy pear and a soft hint of vanilla. The palate strikes a sonorous balance between smoky vanilla and gently peppered pears. There is concentration and promise. The finish is nutty and very long. This is still tightly closed and needs to unfurl, but will become a great gastronomic wine.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2014)
Sonorous nutty notes meld with herbal spice. Tangy grapefruit zest swings into there somewhere, as does a much clearer note of green Conference pear. This is closed but smooth and will open up like a flower bud. On the palate, there is a wonderfully pliant, lemon-accented texture of real freshness.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2013)
Quite broad and caressing on the palate yet at the same time generously juicy with honeydew melon, tangy apple and rhubarb, this wine mingles pungent, nutmeg-tinged green herbs with savory, sweetly-smoky blond tobacco, finishing long on saliva-inducing salinity, subtly peppery bite, ore-like mineral depth, and a winsome sense of extract sweetness. Having been picked later than Bründlmayer’s Berg Vogelsang or Loiserberg Grüner Veltliner, not to mention those vineyards that informed his Erste Lage bottlings, this was quite correctly judged unlikely to benefit from any malolactic transformation. Citrus peel, white flowers, stone fruit and gooseberry dominate the graceful aromatic arc, delicate and bright fruit nuances on the palate, dry, fresh and pure with more yellow fruit and great acidity to match leading to a mineral and slightly spicy finish.

Draws a broad arc that leads from hazel leaves over fully ripe apricot to bergamot orange. Crystal clear and multi-layered, very distinguished and with deep intensity that is still difficult to grasp. Chocolatey fullness and slowly fading oak tannins, but despite all its strength, finesse always sets the tone. A Grüner Veltliner that inspires dreams but shall require time.

Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Fuder 10 2018
Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Fuder 10 2018

The terrifyingly steep Brauneberg hillside has been revered as a top vineyard site since the Romans first cultivated wine grapes in the Mosel valley in the second century AD.

The Juffer Sonnenuhr is the choicest center cut of the Brauneberg — the steepest and most south-facing part of the hillside that surrounds the sundial. This Grosse Lage (grand cru) site produces profound, distinctive wines with great purity and concentration.

Auslese is a special selection of late-picked, very ripe clusters with about 50 percent botrytisaffected grapes. It is a rich, concentrated, full-bodied style of Riesling, with a lively interplay between fruity sweetness and vibrant acidity. It makes a deliciously refreshing, palate-cleansing “sorbet” between courses, or a brilliant accompaniment to fresh fruit dessert dishes.
