Tasting Notes:

Cont’Ugo offers an intense ruby red color. The nose is imbued by notes of such ripe red fruit as raspberries and cherries along with sensations of sweet spices. On the palate, the firm tannic texture, silky and flowing, is well supported by a pleasurable freshness. Cont’Ugo is a balanced wine with a pleasurable persistence and length and much drinking pleasure.

History of Antinori In 1385, the Antinori family became part of the wine business when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine Vintner's Guild. Since 1966, Marchese Piero Antinori, son of Marchese Niccolò, has run the company with his daughters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, also playing an active role. For more than 26 generations now, Antinori's philosophy has been based on the combination of both tradition and innovation: to preserve Italy's enological… Read more

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2019)
A vibrant, succulent red, boasting black currant, blackberry, rosemary, thyme and bay leaf aromas and flavors. Focused and firmly structured, offset by a supple texture. Shows fine balance and length. Merlot. Drink now through 2028.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2018)
The 2018 Cont’Ugo is a gorgeous wine that captures the essence of this coolish year on the Tuscan coast. The juiciness of Bolgheri Merlot is nicely tempered by the moderate year. Sweet dark cherry, mocha, spice and leather all meld together in this gracious red from Antinori’s Guado al Tasso estate. I would give the tannins a year or two to soften.

Robert Parker (RP) : 91 Points (2018)
The Guado al Tasso 2018 Bolgheri Rosso Cont'Ugo is a pure expression of Merlot from the Marchesi Antinori property in Bolgheri on the Tuscan Coast. This vintage is fragrant and bright with aromas that span from bold berry and raspberry to blue flower and dried mint. The aromas are lifted and bright, and to the palate, the wine delivers a graceful medium-bodied approach. This vintage delivers careful and streamlined appeal now in its youth, although it is surely poised to flesh out with time.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2017)
The purity of fruit is impressive here, as is the balance and depth of fruit. It’s full and beautiful with currants and blackberries, as well as walnuts and stones. Very balanced for a 2017.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 91 Points (2017)
Aromas of dark-skinned berry, coconut and oak-driven spice shape the nose on this 100% Merlot. Reflecting the nose, the fullbodied palate offers licorice, dried black cherry, espresso and the warmth of evident alcohol. Firm, fine-grained tannins provide the framework.

Il Matarocchio was inspired by the desire to create, at the Guado al Tasso estate, a wine that was the maximum expression both of a single grape variety and a single vineyard plot. Il Matarocchio was born precisely from one of these sites and is a wine of great elegance and depth, one which springs exclusively from its source of origin and from a remarkable vintage.
