Emerging from the heart of Napa Valley, Abreu Rothwell Hyde 2018 embodies the region's reputation for crafting world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is crafted from a carefully selected blend of grapes sourced from top vineyards in Napa's esteemed appellations, including Stags Leap District, Oakville, and Rutherford.

Vineyards: The grapes for Abreu Rothwell Hyde 2018 are sourced from vineyards with renowned terroir, characterized by well-drained gravelly and clay soils, ideal for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional quality. The vineyards are meticulously tended using sustainable viticultural practices, ensuring optimal grape ripeness and concentration.

Winemaking: Harvesting is conducted at the peak of ripeness, ensuring the grapes retain their vibrant acidity and varietal character. The grapes are gently destemmed and undergo a long and slow fermentation in small, temperature-controlled oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation, which converts malic acid into softer lactic acid, further enhances the wine's balance and complexity.

Tasting Notes:

  • Color: A deep ruby hue with hints of garnet, reflecting the wine's ageworthiness.
  • Aroma: Enticing aromas of black currant, blackberry preserves, while a range of baker's chocolate, violet, alder, sweet tobacco and warm earth notes curl around the fruit.
  • Palate: The palate reveals a symphony of flavors, with blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, and cedar leading the way. Velvety tannins provide structure and depth, while a lingering minerality provides a refreshing counterpoint.

Wine Pairings: Abreu Rothwell Hyde 2018 is a versatile wine that can pair well with a variety of dishes. It is particularly well-suited to grilled or roasted meats, such as steak, lamb, or duck, as well as rich pasta dishes and hearty stews.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 95 Points (2018)
While the 2018 Rothwell Hyde can be thought of as the entry level wine from Abreu, it never tastes like an entry level wine and would easily surpass many estates’ top cuvée. Black fruits, toasted spices, graphite, background oak, and even some meaty nuances all emerge from the nose, and this beauty has full body, ripe, polished tannins, and rock-solid density and depth. It's going to keep for two decades, and readers shouldn’t hesitate to buy bottles. (12/2023)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 94 Points (2018)
The 2018 Rothwell Hyde is outrageously good. Make that outrageously great. This is the best vintage of the Rothwell Hyde I can remember tasting. A few lots from Madrona Ranch that did not fit into that blend work wonders here. Readers will find a vivid, exuberant wine that delivers the goods, big time. (AG) (1/2022)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2018)
This is a serious Cabernet that checks all the boxes, with waves of rich plum, black currant and fig preserves laced with smoldering tobacco, cast iron, dried bay leaf, espresso crema and alder. There's ample grip, but it's integrated, and the finish has cut and drive despite its heft. Large-scaled but balanced. Patience required. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot. 264 cases made. (JM) (5/2022)

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2016)
Offers distinctive sassafras and wild herb aromas, quickly backed up by gently steeped plum, currant and raspberry fruit flavors. Picks up warm earth and tobacco notes, with a racy iron streak buried deeply on the finish. Delivering fruit, minerality, depth and cut, this is one for the cellar. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec. Best from 2022 through 2038. 334 cases made.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2014)
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Rothwell Hyde Proprietary Red has a very classic nose of cassis, black plums and black cherries with hints of unsmoked cigars, pencil shavings, camphor and underbrush with a waft of bay leaves. The full-bodied palate is lively, velvety, generous and packed with fruit, finishing long and spicy.
