Histoire du domaine Dog Point

Dog Point est le résultat du partenariat entre le viticulteur Ivan Sutherland et le vinificateur James Healy, tous les deux des anciens du fameux domaine néo-zélandais Cloudy Bay.

Le nom Dog Point vient des premières colonies européennes qui introduisirent dans le district de Marlborough l'élevage de moutons. A l'époque, les éleveurs utilisaient des chiens de bergers pour garder les troupeaux. Certains chiens se perdaient et éventuellement s'accoupler avec des chiens sauvages qui habitaient sur une colline broussailleuse surnommée Dog Point.

Ils ont décidé au début des années 2000 de faire leurs propres vins de Marlborough à partir des raisins originaires des vignobles de Ivan dans la Wairau Valley. Aujourd'hui, les propriétaires font venir en plus des fruits d'autres vignobles, sélectionnés en particulier pour leur âge, remontant aux années 1970 et aux premières plantations de vignes dans la région.

Le vignoble du domaine

Les vignobles sont composés à l'essentiel de Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay et Pinot Noir dans la Wairau Valley. Cueillis à la main, les raisins sont minutieusement sélectionnés pour partir à la vinification.

Tous les vins, sauf le Sauvignon élevé dans des cuves en inox, bénéficient d’une longue période d'élevage. La vinification veut respecter le processus naturel en utilisant seulement des levures indigènes et en minimisant la décantation et autre manipulation.

Le projet demeure un domaine artisanal qui produit des vins régionaux reflet du terroir des vignobles de Marlborough.

La gamme de vins de Dog Point

Le Chardonnay de Dog Point est un petit bijou de Nouvelle-Zélande, qui fait vibrer les amoureux du monde entier de ce cépage.

Le domaine élabore aussi deux Sauvignon Blancs: la version classique du district de Marlborough et le fameux Sauvignon Blanc Section 94 qui est vieilli pendant 18 mois en barriques.

Dog Point propose aussi un Pinot Noir agréable aux arômes complexes dont son succès peut être imputé à la vogue des Pinots Noirs néo-zélandais.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2020)

This has a complex nose of wild strawberries, spiced cherries, hazelnuts, thyme, nutmeg and bark. Sleek tannins with a creamy texture. Medium body. Silky, long and sophisticated with wonderful depth. From organically grown grapes. Even better after 2023.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2020)

Plush and expressive, offering blackberry, black cherry and blueberry notes at the core, backed by hints of bittersweet chocolate, dried herb and tobacco. The velvety tannins linger effortlessly.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2018)

An understated Pinot Noir that is self-assured on the midpalate. It has a lovely sense of sinew, providing a chalky tension through the midweight core, which is emphasized further by the streak of cool-climate acidity. This isn't fruit-forward; it's a more savory expression, with high violet notes providing the top line of the score and subtle herb and cedar notes (30% new French oak) bringing up the base. Already starting to drink well, this has the structure to evolve from now to the mid-term. Drinking window: 2021 - 2028.

Robert Parker (RP) : 88 Points (2018)

Delicate aromas of sous-bois, humus, beet greens and strawberries emerge on the nose of Dog Point's 2018 Pinot Noir. It's an earthy, slightly herbal wine that's medium-bodied and silky on the palate, with a sense of fragility to the mouthfeel and a quick-fading finish. It's still reasonably attractive and definitely varietally correct, but it's not a strong vintage. Drink it over the next few years.

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 96 Points (2016)

Fragrant, aromatic pinot noir with seductive floral, cherry and subtle spicy flavours. Delicately succulent wine that has clearly been made with a light touch but has impressive power and a lengthy finish. This wine has the X-factor - every sip is even better than the last. (11/2018)

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 16 Points (2016)

Bright pale to mid crimson. Zippy, lively fruit that's very direct but perhaps does not display that much complexity initially. Nice balance and no shortage of fruit. No excess sweetness and certainly no evident oak or alcohol. Well behaved with a hint of violets but perhaps not such a standout as the Chardonnay 2016. 16/20 points. (JR) (12/2018)

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 94 Points (2014)

The 2014 Pinot Noir (aged 18 months in 50% new French oak) offers a classy, seamless and elegant profile to go with textbook Pinot Noir notes of black cherries, smoke, forest floor, and peppery herbs. This cuvée sees a touch of whole clusters in the ferment but they’re beautifully integrated. It’s drinking nicely today yet I see no reason it won’t continue evolving nicely for at least 7-8 years.
