Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2017)

Camphor, wild berry, new leather and blue flower aromas emerge on the nose of this savory wine. Full-bodied and delicious, the structured palate delivers succulent Marasca cherry, baking spice and a hint of menthol alongside firm, refined tannins. This is an incredible performance for what is the firm’s entry level Barolo. Drink 2023–2029. Editors’ Choice.

Massolino's classic 2017 Barolo sees most of its fruit come from Serralunga d'Alba, although a small percentage of the blend comes from Castiglione Falletto. Compared to its peers from this hot and dry growing season, this wine is delicate and almost fragile. It softly reveals cassis, red berries and exotic plum. A second wave of aromas introduces spice, red earth and rusty notes. These results achieve very good balance overall.

A stream of pure, juicy cherry fruit is at the heart of this red, along with mineral, tobacco and wild herb notes. Firm and tightly wound, with a matrix of dense, refined tannins for support. All the elements are in the right proportions, this just needs time.

Decanter (DCT) : 92 Points (2016)

Located directly in the village of Serralunga d’Alba, the Massolino estate blends its classic Barolo from five diverse plots throughout the township as well as one in the neighbouring Castiglione Falletto. A fascinating mix of tar, wild broom, exotic spice and irony notes weave through this wine from start to finish. Assertive, ripe tannins wrap around palate which is full and concentrated yet well-proportioned. There is superb underlying juiciness here.

Very fresh and attractive Barolo with abundant red cherries and a wealth of sweet, rose-petal aromas, too. The palate has a very plush, fleshy and juicy core of fruit in the red-cherry zone. The tannins are velvety and long. One of the more approachable 2015s. Drink or hold.

This is refreshing and bright for the vintage, with scents of dewy rose petals and crunchy berry flavors.The tannins are fine and firm, their texture like new suede, and notes of orange peel and rusty iron add to the wine’s cool brightness.
