The grapes were hand picked and crushed to our eight tonne open top stainless steel fermenters. The wild yeasts present on the grape skins were allowed to initiate fermentation, before cultured winery yeasts were then added. Fermentation and cap/skin management was controlled by the Yalumba designed cap plunger.

Depending on the particular year, the wine may then remain on skins post-fermentation for a period of time, which may be up to two to three months. This extended maturation helps to contribute an even greater complexity and individuality to the wine.

The wine was then matured for 12 months in older Hungarian & American oak hogsheads. The result is a wine of great richness, texture and complexity.

Tasting notes: The wine shows expansive aromas, from roses, Turkish delight, black cherry, earthiness and hints of mushroom. Always complex, the palate is layered, vibrant, long and powdery. Tannin, acid and fruit are all in balance. Expressive and fresh, with several years left in the cellar.

Pair with roasted pork belly with crunchy crackling and homemade fennel and caraway seed gravy.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2012)
This has a truly commanding style with aromas of raspberries, dark cherries and a hint of wild herbs. With plenty of depth and detail on the palate, it has impressive presence, concentration, style and substance. Old-vine tannins (1889-planted bush vines) deliver a grenache that will age a long time and drive a deep, darker-berry-flavored finish. Striking. Drink now to 2025.

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2012)
A temperate year produced a temperate Grenache, hailing from 820 dry-grown, gnarly old bush vines planted in 1889 and spending 10 months in older French oak hogsheads. It's deep and very precise, with tightly wound, crunchy blackcurrant and juicy bramble fruit. Subtle Turkish delight florals, saddle soap and spice add detail and layers. It finishes long, with persistent acidity and finely textured, mineral tannins. Surprisingly good with pan-fried scallop and cauliflower puree.

James Halliday (JH) : 95 Points (2012)
Deep, bright crimson-purple; this is a thoroughly satisfying full-bodied grenache, different to prior releases, its texture and structure akin to that of old vine shiraz; black fruits are on equal terms with red, and the tannins are firm, but balanced; the cork is satisfactory.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 92 Points (2012)
From the oldest plot of the Tri-Centenary vineyards (1889), of which just 820 vines remain, this Grenache is an inky-hued, dense version of the variety, swimming with plush, almost raisiny blackberry fruit, cola, dusting polish, mocha and spice. The full-bodied palate offers more rich, dark fruit and tight-grained, dusty tannins.(Cellar Selection)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2011)
Expressive, vivid, aromatic and peppery, with an elegant approach to the spicy wild blackberry flavors at the core. The tannins gain some traction on the long, effusive finish. Drink now through 2030.

Robert Parker (RP) : 90 Points (2011)
The 2011 Tri-Centenary Grenache shows a medium garnet/brick color and is very peppery, spicy and earthy; there are notes of kirsch and dried mulberries in the background, with additional sandalwood and incense characteristics. An elegant and medium-bodied Grenache, the profile is very peppery and spicy with red berries. The texture is soft and silky, and the wine finishes with great length.
