More information on wine critics and ratings
The Eden Valley lies within the Barossa Range and consists of river valleys and undulating hills covered with large gums, rocky outcrops and Aboriginal sites. It is a high-altitude area of between 400 and 500 metres, compared with the Barossa Valley's elevation of 200 to 300 metres. This higher altitude, with its (one to two weeks) later ripening pattern, results in more distinctive varietal flavour characteristics, lower pH and higher acidities. Whilst the Eden Valley region is most associated with the white wine variety, Riesling, it produces elegant, tautly structured Shiraz which is highly prized by winemakers.

This Torbreck Shiraz cuvée from the cooler climate, higher altitude vineyards of Eden Valley is skillfully blended with fruit from Barossa Valley which traditionally provides greater richness and intensity. A blend of 44 year old Eden Valley Shiraz vines and 80 year old Barossa Shiraz, The Struie is aged for 18 months in a combination of old and new French oak barriques prior to bottling.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2019)
Always a blend of fruit from the Barossa and Eden Valleys, Torbreck's 2019 The Struie is almost entirely Barossa Valley, with only 8% coming from the Eden Valley. Aged in 20% new French oak for 20 months, it's very dark in the glass, with aromas of pencil shavings, blueberries and baking spices. Full-bodied and even more intense than the impressive 2018, it remains supple and smooth from start to finish, where hints of licorice and warmth emphasize the wine's ripeness.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2019)
This vintage of The Struie is almost entirely from the Barossa, with 8% Eden Valley fruit. The hot, dry growing year has resulted in a concentrated but sleek bottling with good cellaring potential. Vivid aromas of freshly crushed bramble berries mingle with violets, scrubby herbs, spices and chocolate. The mouthfeel is supple and fruit driven, supported by fine yet muscular tannins. Drink now–2037.

James Suckling (JS) : 92 Points (2019)
A bold Struie with only a small inclusion of Eden Valley material, this has rich, blackberry and tar aromas, as well as a herbal edge. Very fleshy palate with long, fully formed tannins carrying blackberry and toasty oak spice at the finish. Drink or hold.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2018)
Rich and concentrated up front, with complex and seamless notes of blueberry, huckleberry and wild blackberry, with details of cedar, violets, and white pepper. Finds plenty of harmony on the finish, with hints of mocha and supple, velvety tannins. Drink now through 2030. 300 cases imported.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 90 Points (2017)
This is cool and concentrated up front, with juicy flavors of tart plums and blueberries, along with dark notes of licorice. Then it finishes heady and long, with some warmth in the end. For dark-meat game.

James Halliday (JH) : 97 Points (2016)
Old dry-grown shiraz, 86% Barossa Valley, 14% Eden Valley, matured for 20 months in French oak (12% new). Deep crimson; the wine is archetypal Torbreck style, sweeping away all before its flavours of blackberry, licorice, spice, tar and oak click in, the alcohol just part of the scenery, as are the ripe tannins. If any one wine we produce most exemplifies what Torbreck is, then it's this wine, our ode to the great old vines, planted at the turn of last century, that survived the vine-pull scheme of the 1980's.
