History of Torbreck Estate

Torbreck Vintners was founded in 1994 by David Powell, a former lumberjack, who discovered neglected old-vine Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa Valley. Inspired to create a winery, Powell began by share-farming, a system where he managed the vineyards in exchange for a share of the grape yield. This allowed him to source high-quality fruit from some of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards in the region.

Torbreck's first wine, RunRig, was produced in 1995 from just three tonnes of Shiraz and Viognier grapes. The winery quickly gained international acclaim, particularly following a highly favorable review in The Wine Advocate.

In 2008, Torbreck completed a state-of-the-art winery and bottling facility, which allowed for complete control over the vinification process.

The estate changed ownership in 2013 when David Powell left, and Peter Kight, the current owner, continues to uphold the winery's high standards.

Region and Vineyards

Torbreck is situated in the Barossa Valley, a region renowned for its warm Mediterranean climate and diverse soil types, ideal for producing robust and complex red wines. The Barossa Valley, protected by the Mount Lofty Ranges, is known for its hot, sunny days and cooler nights, which are perfect for growing Shiraz. The valley's soils range from clay to sandy loam and red-brown earth, contributing to the complexity and intensity of the wines produced.

The estate also sources grapes from the Eden Valley, a cooler region with higher altitudes, contributing to the aromatic and structured nature of some of its wines. Eden Valley is known for its well-drained granite and sandy loam soils, producing Shiraz that is more elegant and has a characteristic minerality.

These regions allow Torbreck to create wines with a balance of elegance and intensity.

Wine Range

Torbreck offers a diverse range of wines, focusing primarily on Rhone varieties such as Shiraz, Grenache, and Mataro. Their flagship wines include:

  • The Laird: A single-vineyard Shiraz, one of the most expensive wines in Australia, known for its power and complexity.
  • RunRig: A blend of Shiraz and Viognier, often compared to the wines of Côte Rôtie, known for its rich, aromatic profile.
  • Descendant: A Shiraz/Viognier blend sourced from vines planted with cuttings from the RunRig vineyards.
  • The Factor: Made from old-vine Shiraz, aged in French oak, known for its deep, brooding character.
  • The Steading: A blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro, inspired by Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Did you know?

Torbreck’s name is derived from a forest near Inverness, Scotland, reflecting founder David Powell’s heritage. This influence extends to the naming of their wines, such as The Laird and The Steading, which pay homage to Scottish traditions and landscapes.

James Suckling (JS) : 97 Points (2019)
Terrific intensity and depth with blackberry, blueberry, black ink, graphite and umami. Pencil shavings. Full and very fine with depth and richness. Co-fermented with 8% viogner. This is a wine that seduces you with its aromas and complexity. You just want to smell it. Give it three to four years to open. Try after 2025.

Robert Parker (RP) : 97 Points (2019)
2019 followed the warm (but excellent) 2018 in the Barossa, and was marred by low yields and very concentrated fruit. 2020 was another step further down that low-yielding, dry track, completing a trio of concentrated, brooding vintages that are, as the years go by, harder and harder to get ahold of. So, the 2019 Descendant includes Viognier skins in the ferment, usually around 2%, and the fruit is sourced from vines planted from cuttings from the RunRig Vineyard. A baby Runrig, if you will. So, this is silky, slippery, tannic and intense, with layers of vibrant raspberry, jasmine tea, red licorice, jelly snakes and deli meat. As usual for the Torbreck reds, the texture of the wine is velvety, plush, intense and enveloping. This ages very well, we know it does, but if you must drink it early, decant it!Rating: 97+

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2019)
Fleshy tannins set the stage for rich, dense flavors, but this wine is outstanding for its aromatics as well. Presents palo santo, Asian five-spice, espresso crema, wild blackberry, lapsang souchong black tea and salted toffee, along with a whiff of fresh violet. Gorgeous in its persistence on the long, expressive finish. Shiraz and Viognier.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2019)
The mini-me of Torbreck's renowned Runrig, Descendant sees some Viognier skins. It's a perfumed and powerful wine, with aromas of raspberry tart, blueberry preserves, violet, cracked pepper and beetroot and a good lick of chocolaty, toasty oak. The rich yet sculpted palate is gripped by muscular tannins. It'll soften with time and should age quite gracefully, but for now it's still very young. Best After 2024

Decanter (DCT) : 95 Points (2018)
Heritage cuttings (and second-fill barriques) from Runrig lend pedigree to this single-vineyard co-fermented Shiraz and Viognier (8%) from Marananga. Younger vines (planted 1994) give flamboyant notes of soaring violets, luscious summer pudding fruit, cedar, anise, black pepper, stem ginger, apricot glaze and iron minerality. Silky milk chocolate texture, feathery tannins and cleansing acidity brings terrific finesse to the elegant finish. Bravo!

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 95 Points (2017)
Saturated ruby. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, sandalwood, vanilla and exotic spices, along with floral and mineral accents that build in the glass. Sappy and densely packed, offering sweet blueberry, cassis, cola and fruitcake flavors that are supported by an undercurrent of juicy acidity. Finishes very long and spicy, with a repeating cassis note and steadily building tannins. (JR) (12/2021)

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 95 Points (2017)
Deep, dark red/purple color with a big, dried herb, earthy bouquet which has dimension and richness. The wine is big and bold, dense and layered with abundant soft, ripe tannins. This style has breadth and amplitude, with some herbal notes in amongst the red and dark fruits. A bold, ballsy wine with lots of stuffing. (HH) (2/2020)
