Ageing lasts 18 months in French oak barrels, adding subtle seasoning and structure without obscuring varietal character. Bottled in January 2020, the wine sits at 14.5% abv with a firm, dry profile (total acidity 5.5 g/L; pH 3.66; residual sugar 1.6 g/L). Serve at 16 to 18 °C to highlight its perfume, texture, and fresh, persistent finish.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep purple, vivid and saturated.
  • Aroma: Intense wild berry fruit in harmony with delicate spice, with a distinctly perfumed lift.
  • Palate: Excellent volume with a serious structure of fine-textured, lingering tannins; the finish is fresh, persistent, and enveloping.

Did you know?

Although often a "supporting star" in Douro blends, Touriga Franca is prized for perfume, supple texture, and its ability to keep freshness in warm sites, which is why Quinta do Crasto bottles it as a premium single-varietal only in high-quality years.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Charcoal-grilled lamb chops: The wine's spice and structured tannins mirror smoky char while the fresh finish keeps the pairing agile.
  • Duck breast with blackberry jus: Wild-berry notes resonate beautifully, and the refined tannins frame the duck's richness.
  • Iberian pork presa with rosemary: Herbal lift and juicy texture harmonise with the wine's perfumed profile and oak seasoning.
  • Mushroom and aged-cheese risotto: Umami amplifies depth, while the wine's firm structure and freshness cleanse the creamy palate.

Located on the right bank of the Douro River, between the towns of Régua and Pinhão, Quinta do Crasto is a property of 130 hectares, 70 of which are planted with vines.

Nestled on a privileged location in the Douro Demarcated Region, Quinta do Crasto has belonged to the family of Leonor and Jorge Roquette for over a century and like all the great properties of the Douro it dates back to ancient times - the name "Crasto" is derived from the Latin word "castrum", which means "Roman fort".

The large investments made over the past few years have seen considerable advancements in the reorganisation of the vineyards and the implementation of modern equipment in the winery. This work has resulted in a great selection of top-quality wines, including blended wines (Crasto, Crasto Superior and Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines), single varietal wines (Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional), single vineyard wines (Vinha da Ponte and Vinha Maria Teresa), and special category of Port wines (Finest Reserve, LBV and Vintage).

Despite the use of state-of-the-art winemaking technology, Quinta do Crasto maintains its traditional foot treading method, carried out in large granite tanks called "lagares".

The completion of this phase of investment and the passion for making exceptional wines has contributed to Quinta de Crasto´s growing national and international reputation.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2019)
The 2019 Touriga Franca was aged for 18 months in 90% new French oak and comes in at 14.7% alcohol. It is not common to see this grape as a monovarietal, but there are some. Crasto is getting it right and helping to lead the way. This opens softly, leaning to sensuality, but it expands in the glass, shows off its fine structure and becomes steadily more interesting. It is a lot less sensual at that point but a lot more powerful. The finish is long and gripping. Since the tannins are moderately ripe, this can be drunk now, but this has a real backbone. Giving it a few years to age would be a great idea. It is still closed and a little too aggressive. Some cellaring will let it come together and become more harmonious. It's hard pressed to match the aromatic glory of its Touriga Nacional sibling, but it certainly has virtues of its own. It does seem very ripe this year. Hopefully, it holds its balance as it ages. There were just 5,414 bottles produced, plus some large-format bottles.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2019)
Attractive blue-fruited character here with spices and blue flowers. Hints of iron, too. Tannins are tightly packed, but very fine and lingering. Medium to full body. It’s concentrated and fresh at the same time, with stony minerality at the end. So much verve. They only make this bottling in top years. Drink or hold.
