On release the wine is a bright ruby colour. Its generous aromas and flavours dark cherries, blackberries, raspberries and mulberries, suffused with chocolate mocha and spice.

There is an underlying savoury character, suggesting grilled meats and mushrooms with a hint of black olive tapenade. It is seductively light on entry but rapidly expands on the palate to become rich and mouth filling, while retaining elegance and poise.

Silky tannins help draw out its lingering aftertaste.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2015)
One of the best vintages for this wine (maybe the best?), the 2015 Prima Donna Pinot Noir seamlessly marries dark, earthy, savory complexity with bright red fruit that hints at pie cherries, raspberries and cranberries. Sous-bois, humus and dried spices lead the way, later yielding to the bright fruit. Medium to full-bodied, it's round and supple in the mouth, then gains focus and length on the velvety-textured finish.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 89 Points (2012)
Offers a good mix of savory earth, loam and herb flavors, with roasted hazelnut, cedar, plum and cherry notes, accented by a whiff of dried lavender. Harmonious and plush on the finish. Drink now through 2025. 514 cases made.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2011)
A composed, svelte and powerful pinot with terrific focus and a real sense of freshness. The complexity has been cleverly engineered into place and is all spicy, brambly and foresty. The palate has sheets of tannin tilted upright, is very linear, focused and composed, long and uncompromising, yet smooth and polished. A class act.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2011)
Sep/Oct 13. By Stephen Tanzer. Good bright, deep red. Initially reticent nose opens to reveal complex scents of raspberry, cola, musky spices and flowers. Sappy and fresh, with terrific depth and intensity to the lightly saline flavors of raspberry, bitter cherry and spices. This very firmly built wine finishes with a youthfully bitter quality and solid tannic spine for aging. Give it a double decanting if you plan to broach a bottle any time soon--or, better yet, cellar it for five years. More energy here than the basic 2011 release.-- Stephen Tanzer

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5 Points (2010)
Tasted Nov 2012 - Again, darker and spicier and less openly aromatic than the straight Pinot, especially now in youth. Has red fruit on the mid palate. Savoury oak spice. Dense but very fine tannins. Lots of spice. Tight and mineral on the finish. Very firm. (JH)
