Region and Vineyards

The Manso de Velasco vineyard lies in the northern part of the Curicó Valley, at the foot of the Andes. This inland area benefits from a warm Mediterranean climate tempered by cool Andean breezes, which aid in maintaining acidity and extending ripening times. The vineyard was planted in 1902 in the Molina sector, on the Fundo San Francisco estate. Remarkably, it consists of ungrafted, dry-farmed Cabernet Sauvignon vines, among the oldest of their kind in Chile.

The soil here is deep and well-draining, primarily alluvial in origin with a mixture of clay and sand, ideal for encouraging root penetration and vine longevity. The low-yielding old vines, combined with the effects of the megadrought affecting central Chile, resulted in reduced production but heightened concentration, especially in the 2019 vintage.

Winemaking

This wine is made exclusively from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced entirely from the Manso de Velasco vineyard. The grapes were harvested starting on April 16, earlier than usual to preserve freshness due to a hot and dry growing season.

Vinification began with alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by 100% malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. The maceration lasted 19 days, allowing for full extraction of color, tannin, and flavor. Aging occurred over 18 months in a mix of French oak barrels (13% new, 28% second use) and large German oak casks (59%), providing nuanced oak influence without overpowering the varietal character.

The final blend was bottled in March 2022, with a total production of just 13,000 bottles.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Intense dark ruby with youthful garnet reflections.
  • Aroma: Vibrant and refined, marked by cassis, black cherry, and red currant layered with herbal notes of lemon verbena and bay leaf. Hints of graphite and sweet spice reveal the oak integration.
  • Palate: Elegant yet structured, the palate opens with supple tannins and a core of ripe dark fruit. Notes of cedar, tobacco, and black pepper complement the fruit. The finish is long, textured, and persistent, showcasing both freshness and depth.

Did you know?

The vineyard used for Manso de Velasco is likely the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in Chile, planted in 1902. These ungrafted vines are a rare legacy of pre-phylloxera viticulture, and Miguel Torres was among the first to recognize and protect their historic value when he acquired the site in 1984.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Dry-aged ribeye steak: The wine’s tannins and dark fruit perfectly complement the char and richness of a well-marbled steak.
  • Venison with berry reduction: Gamey flavors find a perfect counterpart in the herbal and spicy character of the wine.
  • Wild mushroom risotto: Earthy and umami-rich, this dish harmonizes with the subtle oak and tertiary notes in the wine.
  • Aged Manchego or Comté cheese: Hard cheeses enhance the structure and spice in the wine while softening its tannic grip.

History of Miguel Torres

In 1979, Miguel Torres arrived in Chile and acquired 100 hectares across Maquehua, San Francisco Norte, and Cordillera, along with a winery in the fertile Curicó Valley. This marked a decisive chapter in modern Chilean viticulture. At a time when the industry was largely traditional and focused on volume, Torres introduced temperature-controlled fermentation and stainless steel tanks, a first in Chile. These techniques brought precision and purity to winemaking, catalyzing a new era of quality production in the region.

Over the decades, the family’s philosophy of combining respect for tradition with cutting-edge innovation has made Miguel Torres one of the most respected names in South American wine. They pioneered organic practices well before they became widespread and were instrumental in reviving historic grape varieties like País and Carignan. Their vision of sustainability extends beyond the vineyard, incorporating community development, fair trade, and educational initiatives for growers.

Today, under the leadership of Miguel Torres Maczassek, fifth-generation of the Torres family, the Chilean operation continues to evolve. His focus includes climate resilience, vine age preservation, and showcasing distinct terroirs through a growing portfolio of single-vineyard wines. The estate remains a benchmark for sustainable innovation rooted in deep heritage, a rare balance in today’s global wine industry.

Region and Vineyards

Located in the Central Valley, particularly Curicó, the vineyards benefit from the Andes’ cooling influence, warm days, and cold nights. These diurnal shifts enhance aromatic concentration and maintain vibrant acidity. The region is also Phylloxera-free, allowing vines to grow on their own roots—an increasingly rare advantage globally.

The estate’s flagship vineyards are strategically planted on alluvial and colluvial terraces, composed of gravel, clay, and volcanic ash. These well-drained soils allow for deep root systems and moderate vine vigor—factors that contribute to the elegance and aging potential of the wines. The vineyards are certified organic, and a significant portion is farmed under dry-farming practices, especially in areas like Maule and Empedrado, reflecting a dedication to low-intervention viticulture.

Beyond Curicó, Miguel Torres Chile has invested in emerging terroirs such as Empedrado, one of the few places in Chile with slate-based soils—a feature more commonly associated with Germany’s Mosel or Spain’s Priorat. Here, on steep, erosion-prone slopes, they cultivate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with remarkable finesse and minerality. These developments highlight Torres' ongoing commitment to discovering Chile’s most distinctive vineyard sites, bringing new dimensions to the country's fine wine narrative.

Wine Range of Miguel Torres

Miguel Torres Chile offers a diverse and expressive range of wines across several key tiers:

  • Cordillera: Premium single-varietal wines showcasing emblematic Chilean terroirs, such as Carmenère from Peumo and Carignan (VIGNO) from Maule.
  • Escaleras de Empedrado: A terroir-driven Pinot Noir grown on steep slate terraces in the southern Empedrado region.
  • Manso de Velasco: An old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon from vines over 100 years old—ungrafted and dry-farmed.
  • La Causa: Wines exploring ancestral varieties and traditional blends, emphasizing cultural heritage.
  • Santa Digna & Estelado: A socially conscious line including Fair Trade-certified wines and the innovative Estelado País rosé sparkling, a tribute to Chile’s forgotten grape.

Sustainability and Social Responsibility

Miguel Torres Chile is widely recognized as a leader in sustainable and ethical winemaking. With all estate vineyards certified organic and extensive use of renewable energy and lightweight packaging, the winery is actively working toward carbon neutrality. Environmental protection is deeply embedded in their philosophy, from biodiversity conservation to dry-farming techniques that reduce water use and enhance terroir expression.

Equally impactful is their commitment to Fair Trade and social equity. As the largest Fair Trade-certified winery in Chile, Miguel Torres partners with small growers to ensure fair pricing, technical support, and reinvestment in rural communities. Projects like the Estelado País sparkling wine not only revived an historic grape but also uplifted the economic stability of many farming families—making sustainability both environmental and human at its core.

Did you know?

Miguel Torres was a key figure in the rebirth of the País grape, once considered inferior. In collaboration with local growers and the Chilean government, Torres created “Estelado”, the first sparkling rosé from País, which went on to receive international acclaim and Fair Trade certification. This project not only elevated a historic grape but also improved incomes and recognition for small-scale growers.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2019)
The 2019 Manso de Velasco comes from an old Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard planted approximately in 1902, ungrafted from a massale selection in the commune of Molina in Curicó that has survived though changes and different eras. The wine has 14% alcohol with good freshness (a much lower pH than in past years). It's balsamic, ripe and quite powerful, with abundant fine-grained tannins, the effect of an élevage in oak barrels and foudres; this is the first year they started using them (for maybe 60% of the volume), and in the following years, they used more. I saw it in the context of a mini vertical of 1995 and 2010, and I could see the stylistic changes through the years (decades!). They defined the different eras: until 1996 with lowish alcohol and less oak; between 2000 and 2014 with more ripeness, extraction and more oak; and then 2015, 2016 and 2017 when only 2017 was produced (and sold exclusively in China) and a transition year; and a new era that starts in 2018. This 2019 is paler, more elegant with spicy and meaty notes; they want to combine good ripeness and power with freshness, soft tannins and balance in general. They do not want to go from one extreme to the other, moving to too light wines. This was not bled; the wine is what it is, with a mixture of herbs and fruit, a balanced mouthfeel with fine-grained tannins and a clean and long finish. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2022. This should evolve and develop nuance and further complexity in bottle.
