Mazzei

Mazzei, founded in 1435, is one of Italy's oldest winemaking families, renowned for crafting exceptional wines that marry tradition with innovation. Rooted in Tuscany, Mazzei produces iconic wines, including Super Tuscans and Chianti Classico, reflecting the region’s rich history and terroir.

History of Mazzei

The Mazzei family’s winemaking heritage dates back over six centuries, with records of their activities in Castellina in Chianti appearing as early as 1435. For 24 generations, the family has remained dedicated to crafting wines that respect and showcase the Tuscan landscape.

Under the leadership of Francesco and Filippo Mazzei, the family has expanded its vision, blending innovation with tradition. They revitalized their Castello di Fonterutoli estate, one of the most historic properties in Chianti Classico, transforming it into a hub of cutting-edge viticulture and winemaking.

The Mazzei family has been instrumental in elevating Tuscany’s global reputation, contributing to the Super Tuscan movement with pioneering wines such as Concerto di Fonterutoli, introduced in 1981.

Region and Vineyards

Mazzei’s heart lies in Castellina in Chianti, where the Fonterutoli estate spans over 650 hectares, with 117 hectares dedicated to vineyards. The estate sits at elevations ranging from 230 to 500 meters, featuring diverse microclimates and soils, such as Alberese and Galestro, ideal for Sangiovese.

Beyond Chianti Classico, the Mazzei family owns properties in Maremma (the Belguardo estate) and Sicily (the Zisola estate). Each vineyard is meticulously managed to reflect its unique terroir, producing wines of authenticity and character.

Wine Range of Mazzei

Mazzei’s portfolio includes an impressive range of wines, showcasing both local and international grape varieties:

  • Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione: A flagship wine expressing the elegance and complexity of Chianti Classico.
  • Siepi: A renowned Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese and Merlot.
  • Concerto di Fonterutoli: A pioneering wine of the Super Tuscan movement.
  • Belguardo: Wines from Maremma, focusing on Vermentino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah.
  • Zisola: Sicilian wines crafted from Nero d’Avola and other indigenous varieties.
