This is really quite an intense Spätlese yet retains a feather light quality, such is the wonderful balance and vitality of the wine.

A vibrant and lovely combination of intensity, minerals and deftness.

Manfred is certainly one of the world's more eccentric wine producers and a tasting in his drawing room with him is always enjoyable and entertaining. In the Sonnenuhr of Wehlen he owns a portion of one of the Mittel Mosel's top vineyards. Its steep south-facing dark slate slopes tend to result in deeply flavoured, mineral yet rich and smoky wines. In addition, he manipulates some plots in the next door Himmelreich of Graacher which produces engaging wines with fresh acidities that are… Read more

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2019)
The 2019 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese is coolish and flinty on the slate-dominated nose that reveals an intense but herbal and terroir-driven bouquet. Sweet and finessed on the palate, this is a crystalline, elegant and salty-piquant Spätlese with a still astringently mineral finish.Rating: 94+

James Suckling (JS) : 95 Points (2018)
All the ripeness of this very warm vintage, married to wonderful freshness that gives this the light-footedness of a great dancer. Mostly white fruit, but just a hint of fresh pineapple. Long, silky finish. Drink or hold

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2018)
This has all of the elements of a great spätlese, with pronounced acidity supporting the ripe peach, yellow apple, mango and spruce flavors, while hints of vanilla and piecrust add to the complexity. Still a bit intense, but this should develop beautifully with age, allowing the minerality to become more prominent. Best from 2022 through 2038.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2017)
Pristine aromas of lemon and lime introduce this crystalline spätlese. It’s lip-smackingly sweet, marked by concentrated honeysuckle and hibiscus flavors. Electric grapefruit acidity leads a long pure finish. Delicious already, it will only improve through 2030, and likely hold much further. *Editors’ Choice* (AI) (4/2019)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2016)
Despite a faintly cheesy, reductive “Mosel stink,” fresh apple and pineapple project a penetratingly fragrant as well as tangy personality to this polished, glossy, buoyant bottling. For now, it lacks the clarity, precision or interest of the corresponding Kabinett, but it’s obviously early days, especially in consideration of the glacial pace at which Prüm wines often evolve. Certainly, though, there is admirable and refreshing sheer length.(DS) (1/2018)
