Margaret River Wine Guide

 

Since the 1960's, Margaret River is a booming wine region which became the main wine area inside the State of Western Australia. It is known for being the first area to try to set up an appellation system in 1978.

Margaret River is located 200 kilometres south of Western Australia's capital Perth. This coastal region is framed by Cape Naturaliste in the north and Cape Leeuwin in the south. It has a warm and moist maritime climate thanks to the Indian Ocean's influence. The climatic conditions are similar to the ones in Bordeaux and allow to produce the famous European-style wines of Margaret River.

The wine region spread on a coastal band with a landscape of low cliffs between the two Cape. The terroir is heavily influenced by the ridge with its clay granitic soil and iron and aluminium composites. The ridge protect the vines behind against the strong winds.

Since the 1960's, Margaret River is booming thanks to the identification of its wine potential.

Grape varieties in Margaret River

The main red varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot which make Bordeaux-like wines. They are blended together to produce high quality wines. Margaret River makes the best Australian Cabernets Sauvignons with their specific aromas of black fruits and fern. The area produces too Syrah and Zinfandel wines with high alcohol level.

Chardonnay is blooming and gives a refreshing acidity and delicious stone fruit aromas. It can make mineral wines with intense flavors. The famous Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend make excellent wines with their crisp acidity and lovely gooseberry and exotic fruit notes.
