Region and Vineyards

Marlborough's climate—cool yet notably sunny, with low rainfall and a maritime influence—delivers long, dry ripening and vivid aromatics while preserving acidity. The combination of high sunshine hours, sea breezes and marked diurnal range underpins Sauvignon Blanc's intensity and clarity.

Greywacke sources fruit from Southern Valleys clay-loams and the Wairau Plains, notably Woodbourne, Renwick and Rapaura, where young alluvials teem with greywacke river stones. Canopies are mainly Scott Henry and VSP to balance light, airflow and flavor development. The blend of gravelly free-draining sites with denser clays yields both ripe stonefruit generosity and linear, saline tension.

Winemaking

Select parcels were machine-harvested at night and others hand-picked by day, then lightly pressed to a modest cut of pristine juice. After brief settling, the must was racked to French oak barriques (small proportion new) for indigenous-yeast fermentation that stretched for well over six months, with occasional bâtonnage. Approximately two-thirds underwent malolactic fermentation.

The wine was taken out of oak before the following harvest and left on lees a further six months, then bottled in September 2023. Key analytics: 13.5% alcohol, pH 3.24, total acidity 6.2 g/L—a profile emphasizing texture, savory complexity and length while retaining brisk line and freshness.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Pale straw with green glints; clear and bright.
  • Aroma: Lychee, mango and white florals layered with gooseberry, tarragon and thyme; hints of linseed, sandalwood and a subtle struck-flint nuance.
  • Palate: Juicy tangelo and gooseberry compote glide over a creamy, lees-derived mid-palate; lively acidity, a gentle saline twist and fine phenolics drive a long, chalk-dry finish.

Did you know?

Greywacke takes its name from New Zealand's ubiquitous greywacke—the hard grey sandstone that dominates Marlborough's riverbeds and alluvial soils. The label is the Judd family's venture, founded by Kevin Judd, renowned winemaker and photographer.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Seared scallops with lemon-brown butter: Sweetness and delicacy mirror the wine's citrus-saline cut and silky texture.
  • Roast chicken with tarragon and fennel: Herbal tones echo the wine's savory spectrum; mid-palate weight matches succulent meat.
  • Miso-glazed salmon: Umami richness is lifted by bright acidity and the wine's flinty, nutty nuances.
  • Goat's cheese and herb tart: Zesty freshness slices through creaminess while herbal notes resonate.

History of Greywacke Estate

The story of Greywacke begins with Kevin Judd, one of the leading figures in New Zealand's wine industry. Born in England and raised in Australia, Judd moved to New Zealand in 1983 to pursue winemaking. His work as the founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay, one of Marlborough’s most famous wineries, catapulted the region to international fame, particularly for its Sauvignon Blanc. Over his 25-year career at Cloudy Bay, Judd helped shape the style of Marlborough’s wines, known for their vibrant acidity and intense fruit flavors.

In 2009, after leaving Cloudy Bay, Judd founded Greywacke as his own independent project, allowing him to focus on crafting wines with a more artisanal, hands-on approach. Initially producing the wines at Dog Point Winery, another notable Marlborough estate, Greywacke became a standalone brand that quickly gained a reputation for quality. Judd named the winery after the greywacke stones that are scattered throughout Marlborough’s vineyards, symbolizing the estate’s deep roots in the local soil.

Greywacke remains a family-run business, with Judd overseeing both the vineyard management and winemaking. His wife, Kimberley, also plays an integral role in the estate’s operations. With a small but dedicated team, Greywacke has established itself as one of Marlborough’s top boutique wineries, producing wines that are both complex and expressive of the region’s terroir.

Region and Vineyards

Greywacke sources its grapes from some of the finest vineyards across Marlborough, focusing on the Southern Valleys and Wairau Plains. The region is New Zealand’s premier wine-growing area, benefiting from a cool maritime climate and long growing season. This combination of climate and geography enables Greywacke to produce wines with intense flavors, vibrant acidity, and a remarkable sense of place.

The Southern Valleys, where Greywacke’s Pinot Noir is primarily sourced, is known for its clay-rich soils, which contribute texture and complexity to the wines. The vineyards here benefit from warmer temperatures, allowing the grapes to achieve full ripeness while maintaining freshness. The Wairau Plains, on the other hand, are characterized by stony, alluvial soils that drain freely and are ideal for growing Sauvignon Blanc. These soils, combined with the region’s abundant sunshine, produce wines with bright fruit flavors and crisp acidity.

Greywacke’s vineyards are managed with sustainability at the forefront, and many of the sites are organically farmed. The winery adheres to Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) guidelines, ensuring that its wines meet the highest standards of provenance, quality, and environmental stewardship. Greywacke focuses on low yields to ensure the concentration and quality of the fruit, with hand-harvesting and meticulous vineyard care throughout the growing season.

Wine Range

Greywacke is best known for its iconic Sauvignon Blanc, which combines vibrant tropical fruit flavors with subtle complexity from wild fermentation. The range also includes:

  • Wild Sauvignon: A more complex, oak-aged expression of Sauvignon Blanc, fermented with wild yeasts to add depth and texture.
  • Pinot Noir: Elegant and structured, Greywacke’s Pinot Noir showcases red fruit, spice, and earthy undertones, reflecting the diverse terroirs of Marlborough.
  • Chardonnay: A rich and textured wine with notes of stone fruit, citrus, and integrated oak, made in a style that balances freshness with complexity.
  • Riesling and Gewürztraminer: Small-batch aromatic wines that emphasize purity of fruit and vibrant acidity.

Did You Know?

In addition to his winemaking achievements, Kevin Judd is a talented photographer. His passion for photography is often showcased on the Greywacke wine labels, which feature his evocative images of New Zealand’s landscapes. His photography has been exhibited internationally and is the subject of several books, including The Colour of Wine.

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2022)
The 2022 Wild Sauvignon is ever an elegant affair, and this year feels quite restrained in its outlay of fruit, oak and spice. I love this wine; it ages beautifully, and it shows the serious, more complex side of Sauvignon Blanc. This is highly recommended. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2022)
Winemaker Richelle Tyney and team have struck the perfect balance with this vintage of “Wild” which, hence the name, is wild fermented in old oak barrels. The matchstick and toasted almond aromas are there but instead of dominating, they’re tangled up with beach shell, seaweed and preserved lemon. The umami, seaside vibes continue on the palate, where a lovely texture and acidity are seamlessly threaded together.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2022)
A stunning white, aromatic and supple, with wild fennel, quince, pear and green papaya flavors on a creamy frame. Aromatic details of mango and honeysuckle, with a whiff of flint, emerge on the finish

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2022)
Lots of character to this, with apples, pears, popcorn kernels and blanched nuts. It’s medium-bodied with delicious fruit and a flavorful finish. A serious sauvignon blanc for chardonnay lover. Flinty and reductive at the end.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2022)
The 2022 Wild Sauvignon is always sensitively constructed, standing out as one of the most successful whites of this tricky vintage. Wild fermented in barrel and left on lees for 11 months, this is layered, detailed and textured. It may not have the intensity nor persistence of the superlative 2021 vintage, but it does have a delightful mid-palate feel and fine linearity. The 2022 is nuanced and aromatic, with flavors of blackcurrant, nectarine and white flowers combining with flinty reductive notes and nutty characters.
