Region and Vineyards
Glen Carlou is situated in the Simonsberg-Paarl region of South Africa’s Western Cape, a renowned area for viticulture. The estate covers 145 hectares, with vineyard blocks that encompass a variety of slopes and aspects, each nurtured according to its own unique potential.
The terroir is exceptional, characterized by its diverse soils and favorable climate. Since Glen Carlou returned to local ownership in 2016, significant investments have been made in vineyard replanting, focusing on drought-resistant rootstocks and new clones to enhance the vineyard's resilience and productivity.
Winemaking Process
The winemaking process for the Quartz Stone Chardonnay 2021 is meticulous, emphasizing the preservation of the fruit's natural complexity and character. The grapes are hand-harvested in the cool morning to ensure optimal freshness.
After whole bunch pressing, 90% of the juice is fermented in new French oak barrels, while 10% is fermented in a designated QS Nomblot-egg tank. The wine undergoes extended fine lees contact throughout its maturation period of one year in small French barrels. This careful process enhances the wine's texture and complexity.
Fun Fact
The name "Quartz Stone" is derived from the specific vineyard block where the grapes are grown, known for its high concentration of quartz in the soil. This mineral-rich terroir imparts a unique minerality to the wine, making it a true reflection of its origin.
