Region and Vineyards

The Martinborough region, located at the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island, is known for its cool climate, perfect for growing Pinot Noir. The Te Muna Road sub-region, from which the majority of the fruit for this wine is sourced, is particularly renowned for its stony alluvial soils, which lend a mineral complexity to the wines. The 2020 growing season in Martinborough began with a cool and wet October, but warmer-than-average summer temperatures ensured optimal ripeness for the Pinot Noir grapes.

This blend of the best Pinot Noir parcels across the district reflects Martinborough’s distinctive terroir, balancing the vibrant fruit with the region’s signature savory notes. Hand-harvested and minimally intervened in the winery, the wine preserves the purity of its vineyard origins.

Winemaking

The grapes for the Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir were hand-harvested and gently crushed into open-top fermenters. To ensure a delicate extraction, the wine was only plunged once per day, followed by an extended maceration period of 20 days on the skins.

After fermentation, the wine was aged for 11 months in French oak barriques, of which 22% were new, adding subtle oak influence and complexity. It was then transferred to stainless steel tanks for an additional 7 months before being bottled, unfined and unfiltered, to preserve its natural character.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep ruby red with a vibrant core.
  • Aroma: A lifted perfume of dark cherries, plum, and wild herbs, layered with savory elements like licorice, mushroom, and Chinese five spice.
  • Palate: Medium-bodied with soft ripe tannins, the palate is rich with voluptuous Pinot Noir fruit flavors, balanced by a fine structure and a long, complex finish.

The Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir is named after Kupe, the legendary Polynesian explorer believed to be the first to discover New Zealand. This wine symbolizes the exploration of new frontiers in winemaking, using the region's unique terroir to craft distinctive, complex wines.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Beef Bourguignon: The rich dark fruit and savory complexity of the wine complement the deep flavors of the beef.
  • Duck with wild mushrooms: The earthiness of the mushrooms pairs beautifully with the wine's savory notes of licorice and five spice.
  • Spicy Asian cuisine: The lifted perfume and soft tannins balance well with flavorful, aromatic dishes like Peking duck or soy-marinated pork.
  • Grilled tuna: The medium body and soft, ripe tannins provide a perfect match for grilled, full-flavored fish.

History of Escarpment Estate

Founded in 1999 by Larry McKenna, a pioneering figure in New Zealand’s wine industry, Escarpment quickly gained recognition for its world-class wines, particularly its Pinot Noir. Larry McKenna, originally from Australia, was instrumental in establishing Martinborough as a premium Pinot Noir region. Often referred to as the "Prince of Pinot," McKenna's vision was to create wines that reflect Martinborough's distinctive terroir while employing traditional Burgundian techniques.

Escarpment was established on Te Muna Road, a prime location within Martinborough known for its alluvial soils and cool-climate conditions. The estate's approach to winemaking has always emphasized minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard to speak through the wines, while focusing on sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.

Over the years, Escarpment has become one of New Zealand’s top Pinot Noir producers, with its wines gaining international acclaim. The estate produces a range of single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, including Te Rehua, Kiwa, and Kupe, each named after significant Maori legends, reflecting Escarpment’s connection to the land and its cultural heritage.

Region and Vineyards

Escarpment is located in the Martinborough wine region, situated at the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island. Martinborough is renowned for its ability to produce cool-climate wines, particularly Pinot Noir, due to its unique combination of alluvial soils, long sunshine hours, and cooling winds from the nearby ocean.

The estate’s vineyards, including its home block on Te Muna Road, are planted on the Martinborough Terrace, where the deep, free-draining gravel soils allow for excellent vine health and concentration of flavors in the grapes. These soils, combined with the cool nights and warm days, give the wines their characteristic freshness, minerality, and elegance.

Escarpment’s commitment to sustainable viticulture is evident in its farming practices, which focus on preserving the health of the land for future generations. The estate also follows a philosophy of low intervention in the winery, ensuring that the wines are a true expression of their terroir.

Wine Range

Escarpment is best known for its Pinot Noir wines, particularly its single-vineyard expressions, which highlight the unique qualities of specific vineyard sites. The estate’s flagship Pinot Noir, Kupe, is named after the legendary Polynesian explorer and showcases the finest fruit from the estate’s oldest vines. Other notable single-vineyard wines include Te Rehua and Kiwa, each offering distinct flavors and structures reflective of their unique sites.

In addition to its renowned Pinot Noirs, Escarpment also produces exceptional Chardonnay, which is noted for its balance of rich fruit flavors and flinty minerality, as well as Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Syrah. The winemaking approach remains consistent across all varieties: using indigenous yeasts, whole-bunch fermentation, and long barrel aging to enhance complexity and texture.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2020)
Intensely spicy and perfumed with concentrated notes of purple plums, cherry stones, rosemary, neroli, cloves, cigar box and ground coffee. The tannins are firm and tightly-knit, providing a solid frame to the dark fruit. Sensual and distinctive.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 95 Points (2020)
A stunning wine, opening up with fleshy black cherry, pomegranate and blood orange flavors that show perfumed details of green cardamom seed and dried violet. The tannins are dense, but also thick and velvety, giving plenty of traction to the long, expressive finish, where notes of malty Assam black tea and forest floor linger.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2017)
Winemaker Larry McKenna's Pinots all possess a signature style, while also being incredibly terroir-expressive. The Kupe is a gorgeous example of this, rippling with waves of raspberry, strawberry and black-cherry fruit, white-pepper spice, crushed rose petals and warm tarmac. The palate is poised and balanced with slinky red fruit, streaks of minerality and fine, granular, powerful tannins. Some French oak shows but should integrate with time. Drink through 2029.

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 95 Points (2017)
A cool vintage has produced a lower alcohol in Escarpment's flagship pinot noir, although the plum, berry and spice flavours are perfectly ripe. An elegant and seductive wine with serious cellaring potential. (BC) (4/2019)

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2017)
Made from own-rooted Abel Clone fruit grown near the winery off Te Muna Road, the 2017 Kupe Pinot Noir boasts the lowest alcohol level (12.5%) I recall seeing on an Escarpment Pinot Noir. It's done a great job integrating the 70% whole-bunch fermentation, leaving behind spicy, black cherry-laced aromas and flavors. Despite the modest alcohol, it's full-bodied, plush and rich, with a long finish and complex herb and spice shadings.
