Grapes for this wine were grown on the Cleland Vineyard Cambridge Street, Martinborough from 29-year-old vines. A combination of deep alluvial gravels which the Martinborough Terraces are renowned for and a blend of Clones UCD 5, 6 and 13 always rewards with savoury, complex, spicy wine.

The 2018 Kiwa Pinot Noir is a blend of Pommard clones originally sourced via University of California, Davis. Like other recent vintages, there's a notable whole-bunch component, which comes through on the nose when the wines are young. Beyond that, there's some black cherries and a stolid earthy character, ample weight and concentration and a long, dusty-tannic finish. This should easily age up to a decade, even if it lacks the flair of its single-vineyard stablemates.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2017)
Very attractive perfume, spice and earthy depth here, as well as vibrant, red-cherry and berry aromas. There’s very attractive tautness to this pinot with crisp tannins that define ripe red cherries and red plums in assertive and succulent style. The refined power is striking.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2017)
#43 Wine Enthusiast Top 100 of 2019From 30-year-old vines in deep alluvial gravels, this is a spicy and pristine wine that's approachable now but is also very cellar worthy. A heady perfume of blueberries, pomegranates, tobacco leaves, scrubby Mediterranean herbs, florals and crushed stones kicks it all off. Then the palate takes it all to another level, bursting with crunchy, juicy fruit, crystalline-like minerality and savory spices, all threaded together with structured ultrafine tannins.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 95 Points (2017)
Fragrant and robust, this red combines power and finesse, with an overwhelming amount of detail. Flavors of black pepper, mahogany, hops, sandalwood, blackberry and plum are joined by accents of Earl Grey tea, cedar and baking spices. The tannins have plenty of muscle, but there's an amazing sense of harmony and polish on the long, intricate finish.

Decanter (DCT) : 94 Points (2016)
A synthesis of white pepper and red cherry with a lovely, salty soy edge. On the palate this is full, fluid and a little edgy – but elegant. It retains a spiciness throughout and does not carry an ounce of fat. The pepper and freshness just linger.

Burghound (BH) : 93 Points (2014)
Like several of the wines in the range this displays a subtle note of herbal tea along with all-but-invisible hints of oak toast on the elegant, pure and beautifully layered aromas of plum, black cherry, raspberry and once again Asian-style tea scents. There is a gorgeous mouth feel to the beautifully textured, concentrated and intense medium weight flavors that coat the palate with juicy dry extract, all wrapped in a strikingly persistent, balanced and utterly delicious finale. This is a wonderfully stylish effort that is at once serious yet refined and it should reward longer-term keeping as the balance is so good that 20 years hence this beauty should still be alive and well. If you can find it, buy it.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2014)
(91+) Bright, dark red. Aromatic scents of anise, red licorice, black pepper and herbs on the nose; more salty than fruity. Suave and juicy in the mouth, with enough raspberry fruit to support the pepper and herb elements. This silky wine conveys a very sexy soil-driven character and complicating salinity. No easy sweetness here but the finish shows excellent length and lift. The tightest of these three single-vineyard Pinots, finishing with a firm tannic spine. This should evolve gracefully in bottle and may ultimately merit an even higher score.
