Domaine Carneros captures the essence of Carneros terroir with this Pinot Noir, crafted from a diverse array of clones grown on the estate.

Region and Vineyards

This Pinot Noir originates from the Carneros AVA, a cool-climate region at the southern edge of Napa and Sonoma, where proximity to San Pablo Bay delivers foggy mornings and maritime breezes. These conditions moderate temperatures, slow ripening, and preserve the grape’s natural acidity and delicate aromatics - ideal for Pinot Noir.

Domaine Carneros cultivates six sustainably certified estate vineyards, each within a few kilometers of the château. With over twenty distinct Pinot Noir clones planted across varied soils and exposures, the estate builds a layered and complex profile through clonal diversity. This “mosaic” of fruit sources allows the winemaker to draw from parcels that bring structure, spice, earth, and fruit purity, offering a wine that reflects both the precision of site selection and the signature finesse of Carneros Pinot Noir.

Winemaking

Crafted entirely from estate-grown Pinot Noir, this cuvée was harvested at optimal ripeness (24.0–24.8° Brix) and fermented to preserve fruit character and site expression. The wine was then matured for 10 months in French oak, one-third of which was new, lending well-integrated spice and textural richness.

Winemaker TJ Evans carefully selects oak to enhance earth and spice nuances without overshadowing the fruit. The final profile balances 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.63 and a moderate acidity of 0.58 g/100 ml, delivering both structure and plushness.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep ruby with garnet reflections.
  • Aroma: Subtle yet layered, with red currant, raspberry, coastal fern, and tobacco leaf.
  • Palate: A burst of cranberry and red raspberry, supported by creamy tannins, spice, and forest floor complexity. Finishes long with warmth and savory detail.

Did you know?

Domaine Carneros grows more than twenty clones of Pinot Noir, allowing the winemaking team to assemble each vintage like a patchwork—balancing aromatic intensity, texture, and longevity from a wide genetic palette.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Hen of the woods mushroom pizza: A winemaker favorite that accentuates the wine’s earthy and savory elements.
  • Grilled salmon with herb crust: Enhances the red fruit and spice interplay.
  • Roast pork loin with cranberry glaze: A perfect complement to the wine’s brightness and supple tannins.
  • Duck breast with cherry compote: Mirrors the fruit and supports the wine’s plush mouthfeel.

History of Domaine Carneros

Founded in 1987 by Claude Taittinger, then president of Champagne Taittinger, Domaine Carneros was established with a clear and ambitious vision: to create a benchmark American sparkling wine estate, rooted in the traditional Champagne method and powered by the unique terroir of Carneros.

The site chosen for the estate lies in the southern part of Napa Valley, where the cool maritime climate is ideally suited to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. A French-style château, modeled after Taittinger's own Château de la Marquetterie in Champagne, was built atop the hills overlooking the vineyards, symbolizing the deep connection between Old World tradition and New World innovation.

From the outset, the estate committed to sustainable viticulture and estate-only production, ensuring full control over quality from vine to bottle. Over the decades, Domaine Carneros has become a reference point in the U.S. for Méthode Traditionnelle sparkling wines and refined, cool-climate Pinot Noir.

Winemaking is led by Zak Miller (CEO and sparkling winemaker) and TJ Evans (still wines), both of whom combine Burgundian finesse with Californian expressiveness. Their philosophy balances precision, aging potential, and terroir expression—particularly in the flagship wines Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs and the Estate Pinot Noir.

Region and Vineyards

Domaine Carneros is located in the heart of the Carneros AVA, straddling Napa and Sonoma counties. This region is defined by its cool, fog-laced mornings and breezy afternoons, moderated by nearby San Pablo Bay. These conditions slow grape maturation, promoting high natural acidity, subtle aromatics, and a long growing season—ideal for producing sparkling wines of finesse and Pinot Noir of texture and purity.

The estate comprises six distinct vineyard sites, all certified sustainable, planted predominantly to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Particular attention is given to clonal diversity, especially in Pinot Noir, with over twenty clones planted to optimize complexity and site expression.

Each plot is farmed with precision, allowing the winemaking team to craft blends that reflect both the personality of the vintage and the signature of the estate. This commitment to estate-grown fruit sets Domaine Carneros apart in the American sparkling wine landscape.
