Region and Vineyards

Located in Wilyabrup, within Western Australia’s celebrated Margaret River wine region, Cullen’s vineyards benefit from a maritime climate influenced by the Indian Ocean, providing warm days and cool nights ideal for Chardonnay. This temperate climate extends the ripening period, allowing for a gradual development of complex aromas and balanced acidity. Wilyabrup is renowned for its well-draining granite and sandy loam soils, which add a mineral dimension to the wines, enhancing their finesse and structural elegance.

The Chardonnay grapes for the Kevin John wine are harvested from three distinct Wente clone blocks planted in 1976 and 1988, reflecting a legacy of nearly 50 years of winemaking. These old vines, rooted in Cullen’s biodynamically managed soils, yield fruit with high concentration and vibrant acidity. The south-facing and level aspects of these vineyards contribute to the freshness and longevity of the Chardonnay, showcasing the distinct terroir of Wilyabrup.

Winemaking

The Kevin John Chardonnay was meticulously crafted, with grapes hand-harvested according to the biodynamic calendar in multiple passes to capture optimal ripeness. After a whole-bunch basket press, 12% of the juice was fermented in amphora with two days of skin contact, bringing depth and texture to the final wine. The remaining juice was pressed into 50% new biodynamic puncheons and a concrete egg, allowing for natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Regular bâtonnage was conducted to enhance texture and complexity.

The wine underwent a full malolactic conversion and aged for six months in puncheons, furthering its rich, layered profile. No fining, filtration, or cold stabilization was applied, preserving the wine’s natural purity. The result is a Chardonnay of impressive concentration, precision, and aging potential, showcasing Cullen’s biodynamic approach.

History of Cullen

Founded by Kevin and Diana Cullen in 1971, Cullen Wines is among the oldest estates in Margaret River, a region they helped put on the world wine map. Initially focused on creating quality wines reflective of their terroir, the Cullens were early advocates of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, setting a benchmark for the style within the region. Kevin, a medical doctor, and Diana, a passionate wine advocate, envisioned their winery as a family venture that prioritized quality, environmental stewardship, and regional expression.

In 1989, Vanya Cullen, their daughter, took the helm as head winemaker. Under her leadership, the estate saw a transformative shift towards biodynamic farming and, eventually, carbon-neutral certification—a first in Australia. Vanya’s dedication to minimal intervention winemaking has been pivotal to Cullen Wines’ success and evolution, emphasizing natural vine health and soil vitality. Her influence has garnered international acclaim, including multiple Winemaker of the Year awards, and she continues to lead Cullen Wines as an exemplar of biodynamic and organic viticulture in Australia.

Region and Vineyards

Cullen Wines is situated in Wilyabrup, a premier subregion within Margaret River, just two miles from the Indian Ocean. This proximity provides a Mediterranean climate that balances warm, sunny days with cool, ocean-breezed nights. Such conditions support a long growing season, ideal for Bordeaux varietals and Chardonnay. These factors allow the vines to ripen slowly, enhancing natural acidity and aromatic complexity in the fruit, which is essential for the elegant, age-worthy wines Cullen is known for.

The 69-acre estate is entirely biodynamically farmed and dry-grown, which strengthens vine resilience and promotes intense, site-expressive flavors in the grapes. The soils are composed of granite and gravelly sandy loam over lateritic subsoils, providing excellent drainage that encourages deep rooting and concentrated flavors. Vanya Cullen’s implementation of the Lyre trellis system optimizes sunlight exposure and air circulation, enhancing the ripeness and quality of varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon. These vineyards, established in the 1970s, continue to produce wines with a true sense of place, showcasing Margaret River’s unique terroir and Cullen Wines' dedication to sustainable viticulture.

Wine Range of Cullen

Cullen Wines offers a selection of highly esteemed wines that emphasize the estate’s dedication to terroir expression and quality. The flagship Diana Madeline, a Bordeaux-style blend named in honor of founder Diana Cullen, is crafted from old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon and is revered for its balance, depth, and aging potential. This iconic wine is a testament to Cullen’s commitment to quality and minimal intervention.

The Kevin John Chardonnay, produced from old vines planted between 1976 and 1988, is another standout in the portfolio. Known for its elegance, texture, and complexity, this wine showcases the unique qualities of Margaret River Chardonnay and Cullen’s attention to biodynamic detail, including aging in biodynamic oak barrels.

Another notable wine is Vanya, a rare Cabernet Sauvignon produced only in exceptional vintages. It embodies Cullen’s minimalist approach to winemaking, with layers of primary fruit, savory undertones, and a structure that allows for extensive aging.

The Red Moon, a vibrant blend from the Mangan Vineyard, includes Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Merlot and highlights Cullen’s passion for biodynamic practices with alternative varieties.

The Grace Madeline and Dancing in the Sun white blends capture the freshness of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Verdelho, celebrating the brightness and vibrancy of Margaret River’s maritime influence.

Robert Parker (RP) : 97+ Points (2022)
The Chardonnays I have tasted so far from the 2022 vintage in Margaret River remind me of the 2014s, in their soft acidity and primal, almost unbound fruit power. Here, the 2022 Kevin John Chardonnay leads with crushed nuts, salted yellow peach, red apple skins, preserved citrus rind, yuzu, green tea and saltbush, before tumbling into the flavors in the mouth. Toffee apple, nuts, curry leaf and saffron. Concentrated, piercing and intense. The acid envelops the tongue and holds it hostage, while the fruit explodes with power. The Gingin clone is on show here. The wine trails to a soft, juicy finish. It is lingering, very good, excellent, even better after a gentle decant and served in a big Burgundy glass. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

James Halliday (JH) : 97 Points (2021)
Matured in puncheons (35% new and of biodynamic origins) for eight months without further additions. The color pick-up is substantial, but there's nothing in the bouquet that suggests premature aging, et al. It's complex but harmonious, long and balanced. There's more stone fruit, fig and melon than citrus, but that's intentional, and in tune with the Wilyabrup subregion.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 97 Points (2021)
The 2021 Chardonnay Kevin John is exceptional from start to finish. It is a beautifully pure and pristine expression of young Chardonnay that also carries excellent generosity of flavor. Precise grapefruit, pear, ginger and high quality spicy oak aromas provide a strong introduction. Energetic and vivacious, there is a delicious tension between crisp acidity and lively, youthful fruits, all beautifully balanced, before a long, chalky, zesty finish with extreme length. A benchmark Margaret River Chardonnay.

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2021)
A sumptuous, textural Chardonnay from a shy-bearing year (just one ton of fruit per hectare), this shows honeyed ripe pear, vivid passionfruit curd, mandarin, fresh fig and white carob. Bountiful, yet controlled, an undertow of acidity buoys and carries the fruit. Sourced from the Wente clone, after whole-bunch pressing the grapes fermented mostly in barrel as well as concrete egg. A powerhouse, it effortlessly integrates 100% malolactic fermentation and ageing in 100% new oak.
