Always classy, always evocative and always richly textured. Sophia means wisdom, its name is inspired by the accumulated knowledge of current and previous generations.

Tasting note: dark garnet core colour. Spicy notes of cinnamon and freshly roasted espresso beans combine with oak and herb notes of cedar and thyme to overlay a ripe blackcurrant base aroma.

The palate exudes elegance via a balance of fine layered tannin and mid palate fruit presence. This wine has a soft texture on a mid weight frame, yet has immense length.

Craggy Range was founded in 1997 when Terry Peabody and Steve Smith MW set about seeking out and buying the best vineyard sites in New Zealand. They planted them with vines best suited to each terroir with the ambition to produce single vineyard wines that would compete with the best in the world. It is this simple philosophy that drives the entire system of farming and winemaking at Craggy Range. The wine team is headed by Steve Smith MW in his role as Director of Wine and Viticulture. Brambly plums and vanilla-lead spices, as well as notes of cedary oak. There’s also a stony edge to this. The palate has plump, fleshy fruit, backed by some grainy tannins that weigh in amid smooth plums and mulberries. Espresso-tinged finish. A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, petit verdot and malbec. Drink in 2021. Screw cap.

Robert Parker (RP) : 90 Points (2016)
While the 2016 Sophia is an impressive blend of 58% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, in the context of the Craggy Range Prestige Collection, it has to be considered a weak link. Dried herbs frame black cherries on the nose, while the mid-palate of this medium to full-bodied wine lacks the rich degree of texture shown by the winery's other top bottlings. The dark fruit flavors turn crisp on the finish, ending in a flurry of tart cherry and cranberry flavors.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 89 Points (2016)
Housed in a wrist-achingly heavy bottle, the cellar-bound 2016 vintage of this wine is as broody and rich as the previous year, although it's showing a little more generosity on the palate this time around. A nose of ripe blackberry, black cherry and blueberry fruit is accompanied by dried mint and rather flashy chocolatey oak notes. The fruit feels fresher on the palate, thanks to a lifted line of acidity. It's wrapped in muscular, leathery tannins and finishes on a blackberry tang. Drink 2021–2029.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 92 Points (2015)
This stylish merlot-dominant blend grows in the gravelly soils left behind from the 1876 flood of the Ngaruroro River. The wine offers refinement and succulent fruit countered by firm, ample tannins. Saturated plummy fruit and cassis curl up with notes of violets and woodsy spice, making this an excellent demonstration of Bordeaux varieties grown in the right place.

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 98 Points (2013)
Lifted aroma with pronounced plum and floral characters. A complex array of flavours on the palate including plum, dark berry, chocolate, spice and a hint of violet. Gorgeous wine with plenty of weight, a silken texture and real energy. Will be very long-lived

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2013)
(13.5% alcohol; 2013 was a great Merlot year, according to winemaker Matt Stafford, who noted that the selection for this bottling is made in October): Bright dark ruby. Deep, slightly medicinal scents of black cherry, black plum and dried herbs. Delivers a lovely blend of density, sweetness and reserve, offering a fine-grained texture and complicating soil tones to the well-delineated flavors of purple fruits and licorice. Finishes with rather noble tannins and sneaky length. The crop level for this bottling is typically between 6 and 8 tons per hectare, according to Stafford. This Bordeaux blend should age gracefully on its intensity and balance. (My second sample showed a much stronger licorice pastille quality on the nose and palate and less early sweetness.) (ST) (5/2016)

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5 Points (2013)
Convincing evidence of this vintage's quality in Hawke's Bay. Hand picked 62% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. In 42% new barriques for 19 months. Bright crimson and very bright fruit that is very beautiful and beautifully balanced. Super ripe but not sweet. Much fresher than the too-heavy bottle suggests. Really very accomplished. Long and neat. Really lovely wine that lasted well in an opened bottle - A Good Sign.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2013)
Plush and ripe, this red offers a sophisticated, elegant mix of blackberry, plum, spice and dried floral notes, with a touch of espresso. Features firm, velvety tannins and cedar and cigar box aromatics on the finish. Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2025.

Bramare Malbec from the Marchiori Vineyard exhibits is a deep-red purplish colour, with a sweet and fruity aroma. Exquisite flavours of red and black berries, tobacco and liquorice invade the mouth. Sweet tannins and an outstanding volume give complexity and structure, leading to a long and intense aftertaste.

Bonarda is the second most important red grape in Argentina, and Emma is one of the very best examples. Emma Zuccardi, Sebastián’s Grandmother, is an elegant and charming woman; characteristics Sebastián has worked hard to reflect in this wine. Grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Paraje Altamira and San Pablo regions of the Uco Valley.
