Rich cherry and plum fruit that is spiced with oak notes of cinnamon and clove. Sitting below the fruit, earthen and mineral smokiness, which is lifted by hedonistic floral notes.

Decadently sweet fruited and richly textured. The density of the wine is counter balanced by bright acidity and supple tannins.

The 2019 Te Wahi Pinot Noir hails from Central Otago (to be clear), but I’ve included it in the Marlborough report, given the estate is based there. Bottled in very heavy Burgundy glass and under natural cork, this wine leads with savory, earthy notes of fresh game, black pudding, charred coffee grounds, resin, oak and inflections of peat. In the mouth, the wine is hearty and full, shaped by firm, plentiful tannins. It feels very early in its lifespan, currently. It’s an altogether savory, rich, dense wine with a long future in front of it. 13.5% alcohol

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2018)
Creamy and elegant, but not shy on power, with milk chocolate-covered maraschino cherry, raspberry, strawberry and accents of clove, cardamom and oolong tea. Reveals hints of sandalwood on the long, expressive finish.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2018)
Pretty nose of lavender, strawberries, pomegranates, wild mushrooms and mocha. Spicy and polished, with a medium to full body and silky, firm tannins. Delicious sweet spice coming through. Drink or hold.

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 96 Points (2017)
A blend of wines from Bannockburn, Bendigo and Lowburn. Fragrant, attractive aroma of black cherry and red rose petals that continues onto the palate where it is joined by plum, crushed herbs and grape stem flavours. Fruit sweetness is nicely balanced by fine, ripe tannins to give a pleasantly dry finish. Youthful but approachable with obvious cellaring potential. (9/2020)

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 90 Points (2015)
Jim White blends this wine from two sites, Northburn in Lowburn and Calvert in Bannockburn. It’s a meaty Central Otago pinot, with crunchy red fruit that’s an equal match to the powerful oak and its heady, resinous richness. A heavyweight pinot without any excess fat, it’s built to cellar, or to decant for braised short ribs.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2014)
Cloudy Bay's latest vintage is the first from their own vineyards in Central Otago and reflects a step up in quality despite a challenging vintage. Plummy fruit dominates the rather chunky wine, framed by hints of toast and dried herbs, while moderately dusty tannins and bright acids mark the finish. Drink 2018–2025.
