Vineyards:

Clos des Fous has 19 hectares of vineyards in total, which is supplemented by fruit from selected growers. Pedro Parra's key aim was to move plantings away from the fertile plains and up the slopes into the Andean and Coastal ranges, where the rockier soils result in lower vine vigour and deeper roots, which he believes gives better balance and more finesse to the wines. Cauquenina means “girl from cauquenes”. This blend comes from non-irrigated old vines, planted on ancient red granite slopes.

Vinification:

Cauquenina is a blend of several varietals. Each lot was vinified and aged separately. Fermentation took place in cement vats. A portion (about 15 to 20%) of the wine was put into new French oak barrels and the other part in one-year-old barrels. The fermentations were slow and careful so as not to over-extract.

Tasting Notes:

This wine is dark ruby red in colour with violet tones. On the nose, it has black and red fruit aromas, predominately cherry and raspberry. The complex nose also has floral notes of chamomile and tea leaves. A touch of minerality comes through on the palate with notes of graphite and earth. The wine is generous and silky with very fine tannins and excellent acidity which enhance the Cauquenina's liveliness and balance.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2015)
Plenty of berry and cherry fruit character with lemon undertones. Some orange peel, too. Medium-to-full body, tight and focused. Delicious finish. Cool, old-vine wine.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2015)
The multi-grape blend 2015 Cauquenina wants to show the character of the Secano Interior and Costero rather than the varietals used in it. It does show some ripeness and spicy oak. It feels like a serious red, with 14% alcohol, good weight and fine-grained tannins.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2013)
Brilliant ruby-red. High-pitched red and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of Asian spices and floral pastilles. Sappy and expansive in the mouth, offering appealingly sweet, spice-laced raspberry and cherry liqueur flavors and hints of succulent herbs and candied flowers. Shows impressive clarity and cut on the incisive finish, which features silky tannins and impressively persistent floral and spicecake notes. -- Josh Raynolds

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2012)
This atypical Chilean red hails from the Maule Valley and eschews oak and ripeness and instead delivers wiry raspberry, currant and dried-earth aromas in front of a high-acid, racy palate that's medium in body. Snappy, spicy red plum and raspberry flavors are fresh and edgy, with scraping acidity creating a zesty, scrubbing finish. Drink through 2020.

The Alto Cachapoal D.O. is a cold, high altitude area of the Andes mountain range, gving the grapes a natural high acidity. The nose has hints of white peach, pear and white flower blossom giving way to a buttery palate.
