Region and Vineyards

Château Lafite Rothschild lies at the northern edge of the Pauillac appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, adjacent to Saint-Estèphe. Its most revered vineyards crown the Plateau des Carruades, the highest point in Pauillac. These well-drained gravelly-clay soils, bathed in sunlight and tempered by the Gironde estuary, provide a haven for Cabernet Sauvignon, enabling perfect ripening and stress regulation even in unpredictable vintages.

Some of Lafite’s oldest vines are situated in parcels technically within Saint-Estèphe, adding complexity and depth to the grand vin. In 2018, the season began with heavy rainfall and mildew pressure, posing immense viticultural challenges. From mid-July, however, dry, hot weather restored vine health, allowing for an outstanding late season. By harvest, fruit was healthy, concentrated, and impeccably ripe.

Winemaking

The 2018 vintage is composed of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot, and 0.5% Petit Verdot, reflecting a classic Médoc profile anchored in Cabernet's strength and purity. Grapes from each plot were vinified separately in a mix of wooden, stainless steel, and concrete vats, depending on the fruit’s maturity and origin. Fermentation occurred under precise temperature control with gentle extraction via regular pump-overs.

The wines were macerated for approximately 22 days, then underwent malolactic fermentation before being transferred to new French oak barrels for 15 months of aging. Barrels were crafted at Lafite’s own cooperage, Tonnellerie des Domaines, ensuring exacting standards and stylistic continuity. Only the most refined lots were selected for the final blend, epitomizing the estate’s signature elegance and aging potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep garnet with vivid purple hues, revealing youth and vibrancy.
  • Aroma: Initially reserved, the bouquet gradually reveals layered notes of blackcurrant, wild raspberry, cedarwood, and graphite—hallmarks of Lafite's noble style.
  • Palate: A strikingly harmonious attack leads to a palate of precision and depth. Silken tannins and refined fruit glide to a lingering, fresh, and mineral-laced finish, underscoring its finesse and longevity.

Did you know?

The 2018 vintage coincided with preparations for Lafite’s 150th anniversary under the Rothschild family, who acquired the estate in 1868. Despite a year fraught with weather challenges, the estate demonstrated its capacity to achieve greatness through vineyard vigilance and cellar precision. This is a testament to Lafite’s unique terroir and the estate’s quiet mastery of its elements.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Roasted venison with blackberry jus: The wine’s depth and forest-fruit character resonate beautifully with game and dark berries.
  • Beef filet with truffle purée: Silky tannins and earthy notes complement luxurious, umami-rich dishes.
  • Seared duck breast with five-spice glaze: Aromatic complexity pairs harmoniously with spiced richness and tender meat.
  • Aged Manchego or Ossau-Iraty: Firm, nutty cheeses accentuate the wine’s structured tannins and minerality.

History of Château Lafite Rothschild

The history of Château Lafite Rothschild stretches back to at least the 14th century, when it was mentioned as a manso (a type of agricultural estate) under the feudal lordship of the abbey of Vertheuil. By the 17th century, it was already producing wine under Jacques de Ségur, a figure often credited with formalizing viticulture at Lafite. The estate earned early renown, especially in the 18th century, when it gained a reputation among European elites and was frequently referred to as “the King’s wine.” It was reportedly served at the court of Versailles and favored by ministers and royalty alike.

The transformative moment came in 1868, when Baron James de Rothschild, a member of the prominent French banking dynasty, acquired Château Lafite. Following his death shortly thereafter, the estate passed to his three sons and has since remained under the ownership of the Rothschild family. Unlike their cousins who later acquired Château Mouton, the Rothschilds of Lafite adopted a more discreet and traditionalist approach to estate management.

Throughout the 20th century, the estate experienced fluctuating fortunes, including the challenges of phylloxera, war, and economic depression. However, the modern renaissance of Lafite began in earnest in the 1970s and continued through the leadership of Baron Éric de Rothschild, who oversaw significant investment in the vineyard and cellar. In 1994, Charles Chevallier was appointed technical director, ushering in a new era of consistency and excellence that reasserted Lafite’s dominance among Bordeaux First Growths.

Today, the estate is part of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (DBR), an international wine group with holdings in Bordeaux and abroad. In recent years, operations have been guided by Saskia de Rothschild, representing a new generation of leadership.

Region and Vineyards

Château Lafite Rothschild is located at the northernmost edge of the Pauillac appellation, bordering Saint-Estèphe. The vineyards span approximately 112 hectares, planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon (about 70%), along with Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc, and a small amount of Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 40 years, though some parcels exceed a century, including a historic plot known as “La Gravière,” planted in 1886 and still in production.

The crown jewel of the estate’s terroir is the Plateau des Carruades, a well-drained gravelly rise to the west of the château. These soils, consisting of deep gravel over limestone and clay, offer excellent drainage and heat retention, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon’s slow, even ripening. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures and protects the vines from frost and excessive heat, contributing to the consistent ripening of fruit across vintages.

In addition to the main vineyard, Lafite also farms a 4.5-hectare parcel technically within Saint-Estèphe, producing grapes of remarkable quality used in the grand vin.

Wine Range of Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild produces three wines:

  • Château Lafite Rothschild (Grand Vin): This is the flagship wine of the estate, a long-lived Pauillac blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. Known for its remarkable finesse, aromatic purity, and aging potential, it is considered one of the greatest wines in the world.
  • Carruades de Lafite: The second wine of the estate, sourced from younger vines and specific plots on the Carruades plateau. It shares the grand vin’s style but in a more approachable format and earlier drinking window.
  • Domaine d’Aussières (outside Bordeaux): As part of Domaines Barons de Rothschild’s broader portfolio, the group also produces wines in Languedoc, Argentina, Chile, and China. However, these are separate from the Pauillac operation and are not labeled as “Lafite.”

All vinification is done with meticulous parcel-by-parcel precision, and aging occurs in 100% new French oak barrels, crafted at the estate’s own cooperage, Tonnellerie des Domaines, a rarity even among Bordeaux First Growths.

Did you know?

Lafite was one of the original wines named in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, and it was ranked at the very top of the First Growth category—a position it has retained through every vintage since.

The estate’s wines were so highly valued in the 18th century that Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and a noted wine enthusiast, listed Château Lafite among his top favorites after visiting Bordeaux in 1787.

Additionally, Château Lafite has been the subject of some of the most spectacular wine auctions in history. Bottles dating from the 18th century have sold for over $100,000, contributing to the estate's legendary status in global wine culture.

Robert Parker (RP) : 100 Points (2018)
The 2018 Lafite Rothschild is blended of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot and has 13.3% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it needs a fair bit of swirling to unlock intoxicating scents of blackcurrant cordial, baked plums and black cherry compote with an undercurrent of dark chocolate, licorice, cast-iron pan, cedar chest and fertile loam, plus a waft of pencil lead. The delicately crafted, medium-bodied palate is dripping with class, featuring layers of mineral-laced black fruits and exquisitely ripe, singularly Lafite tannins, finishing with epic length and depth. This simply stunning, delicately crafted expression of 2018 with its singularly evocative imprint of Lafite will require a good 7-8 years in bottle, then should continue to inspire awe over the following 40+ years.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 100 Points (2018)
An immensely structured wine, this is complex, concentrated and yet so contained. The wine impresses with its balance, layers of succulent black-currant fruits and effortless style. A wine for the long term, it should not be touched before 2029.

James Suckling (JS) : 99 Points (2018)
Wow. The aromas are so intense and refined at the same time, offering gorgeous blackcurrant, lead-pencil and orchid character. Such purity of fruit. Sleek and finely polished with a fine cut to the tannins that provide such grace and glamor. Yet, it’s got the power and structure to age for decades. On and on. Try after 2029.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 98 Points (2018)
Checking in as a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot, the 2018 Château Lafite-Rothschild is one of those magical Lafites that offers an already up-front, complex, nuanced style yet has the class and balance to evolve for 40-50 years. As always, this wine is never about sheer power, and the 2018 offers a full-bodied, incredibly elegant and weightless style that carries textbook blackcurrant fruits, lead pencil shavings, green tobacco, cedarwood, and camphor aromas and flavors. I compared this wine to a more elegant version of the 2016 from barrel and I think that comparison still holds. Incredibly up-front and charming, and already drinkable with sweet tannins, it will unquestionably pick up more complexity and nuance over the coming 4-6 years. It should hit maturity around age 10 and evolve for 75 years or more given its perfect balance. This is a beautiful, quintessential Lafite that exudes elegance and charm.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 97 Points (2018)
Very pure, with a sleek and extremely focused beam of cassis, black cherry puree and blackberry preserves streaming through, lined along the edges with savory, sweet bay leaf and black tea details. Those extra notes assert themselves through the finish, but without intruding too much on the fruit, letting it play out over a long iron spine. Hums with precision. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2030 through 2045.
