Region and Vineyards

Château Haut-Brion, located in the commune of Pessac, is the oldest of Bordeaux’s First Growths and the only one situated outside the Médoc. Its vineyards, in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, are rooted in deep gravel and clay soils that provide ideal conditions for ripening Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon with complexity and elegance.

The 2018 vintage began with a stormy spring and a severe hailstorm on May 26th that briefly slowed the growing season. Despite this, the vines recovered quickly, aided by a warm and stable June that supported even flowering. Summer was hot and dry, allowing for steady, stress-free ripening. A period of high pressure in September created ideal harvest conditions, with fruit picked at optimal ripeness between September 6 and October 2, resulting in a crop of excellent health and concentration.

Winemaking

The 2018 blend consists of 49.4% Merlot, 38.7% Cabernet Franc, and 11.9% Cabernet Sauvignon. This composition reflects a vintage in which Merlot and Cabernet Franc both thrived, yielding expressive, aromatic, and structurally refined wines. Grapes were sorted and vinified parcel by parcel to preserve their individual terroir signatures.

The wine was matured in 62% new French oak barrels, allowing subtle oak integration while preserving fruit purity and complexity. With an alcohol level of 14.5%, this vintage balances richness and ripeness with superb textural precision. Bottling took place between June 26 and July 3, 2020, after nearly two years of carefully monitored élevage.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Dark, intense garnet with deep ruby edges.
  • Aroma: Highly complex with ripe black fruit, sweet spices, and earthy undertones. Notes of graphite, cedar, and black cherry emerge with air.
  • Palate: Begins supple and velvety, then builds into a broad, full-bodied mid-palate supported by fine-grained tannins. The finish is long and refined, offering richness without heaviness and freshness without austerity.

Did you know?

The 2018 vintage features one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Franc in recent decades at Haut-Brion, accounting for nearly 39% of the blend. This reflects both the grape's outstanding performance that year and the estate’s growing confidence in its ability to bring floral lift, mid-palate precision, and aromatic complexity.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Roasted squab with wild mushroom risotto – the earthy depth and supple tannins pair beautifully with game and umami.
  • Beef tournedos with foie gras and black truffle – a luxurious match for the wine’s richness and spice.
  • Lamb shoulder confit with rosemary and olives – complements the wine’s Mediterranean hints and fine tannic backbone.
  • Aged Morbier or Beaufort – enhances the wine’s structure and savoury nuances.

History of Château Haut-Brion

The origins of Château Haut-Brion trace back to 1525, making it the oldest of Bordeaux’s Premiers Grands Crus Classés and the first luxury wine brand in modern history. Jean de Pontac, who acquired the estate in the early 16th century, was instrumental in developing and promoting Haut-Brion wines. By the mid-17th century, the wine had already gained acclaim in London society, notably recorded by diarist Samuel Pepys in 1663 — the first known English reference to a wine by name and origin.

In 1855, during the famous Bordeaux Classification commissioned for the Exposition Universelle in Paris, Haut-Brion was ranked among the top four First Growths, the only one outside the Médoc. In 1935, Clarence Dillon, an American financier, purchased the estate, and the Dillon family continues to own and guide it today through Prince Robert of Luxembourg, who serves as CEO of Domaine Clarence Dillon.

Under the Dillon family’s stewardship, Haut-Brion has consistently upheld its legacy while embracing innovation. In 1961, the estate became the first among the First Growths to modernise its vinification facilities, pioneering stainless steel fermentation tanks. More recently, it inaugurated a cutting-edge winery in 2013, designed to vinify each parcel separately for maximum precision.

Region and Vineyards

Château Haut-Brion is located in the commune of Pessac, just five kilometres southwest of central Bordeaux. It lies within the Pessac-Léognan appellation, which was formally established in 1987 and encompasses the northern part of the Graves region. Haut-Brion is uniquely situated within the city’s suburban boundaries, a testament to its historical importance and continuity despite urban expansion.

The vineyard covers approximately 51 hectares for red grapes and 3 hectares for white grapes. The soils are composed of deep gravel terraces on a clay subsoil—an ideal matrix for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. For the whites, the estate grows Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, which thrive on the estate’s cooler, gravelly plots.

The diversity of the terroir is meticulously mapped and parcelled to allow micro-vinification, giving each plot the tailored attention it needs. Vine density is high (up to 10,000 vines per hectare), and vineyard management follows sustainable practices, reflecting both tradition and scientific precision.

Wine Range of Château Haut-Brion

Château Haut-Brion produces two iconic wines:

  • Château Haut-Brion Rouge, the flagship Grand Vin, typically a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, is known for its longevity, depth, and complex aromatic profile of earth, tobacco, graphite, and black fruit. It is one of the most age-worthy wines in the world, capable of evolving over decades.
  • Château Haut-Brion Blanc is one of Bordeaux’s rarest and most coveted dry white wines, made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Its richness, minerality, and capacity to age rival the great whites of Burgundy.

The estate also produces Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, its second red wine (formerly named Bahans Haut-Brion), and La Clarté de Haut-Brion, the second white wine shared with La Mission Haut-Brion.

Every wine is crafted with the utmost care, from hand-harvesting, through gravity-fed vinification, to extended ageing in French oak barrels (with a high proportion of new wood). Bottling is conducted without filtration to preserve the wines’ natural texture and complexity.

Did you know?

Château Haut-Brion was the first Bordeaux estate to be described and recognised for its terroir rather than its owner—a revolutionary concept in the 17th century. Its name is derived from a small gravelly hill, or “brion”, referring to the estate’s prized terroir. Today, the estate also serves as the headquarters of Domaine Clarence Dillon, which oversees several other prestigious properties including Château La Mission Haut-Brion and Château Quintus in Saint-Émilion.

Robert Parker (RP) : 100 Points (2018)
The 2018 Haut-Brion is composed of 49.4% Merlot, 38.7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11.9% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, the wine needs a lot of swirling before it begins to release a whole complex melody of notes, one at a time to begin: tilled earth, followed by pronounced licorice, then crushed rocks, then the preserved plums. Eventually, it all comes together into a fascinating crescendo of intense crème de cassis, rose oil, wild blueberries and kirsch notes, giving way to quiet, persistent leitmotif scents of cinnamon stick, truffles and redcurrant jelly. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers all this and more, revealing tightly wound black fruit, red berry and exotic spice layers within a solid, wonderfully plush frame and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length and loads of earth and mineral sparks.

James Suckling (JS) : 99 Points (2018)
Aromas of currants, leaves, fresh mushrooms, oyster shell, tobacco, and dried flowers, following through to a full body, yet ever so refined and polished and it grows on the palate. Lovely, energetic finish. Subtle and driven at the end of the palate. Drink in 2026 and onwards.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 98 Points (2018)
Waves of cassis, cherry puree and blackberry paste roll through in this showstopper, with notes of tea, sandalwood, iron and anise providing an entourage for the fruit. A subtle warm earth accent underscores the finish without intruding on the texture. A large-scaled yet eminently refined wine. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2025 through 2045.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 98 Points (2018)
This wine has an immense structure that's powered by tannins, yet backed by a dry core and bright acidity. The black currant flavor is very fine and concentrated while also having a juicy freshness that marks the vintage. It has all the structure that should be expected from this estate.Barrel Sample: 96-98

Decanter (DCT) : 98 Points (2018)
A beautiful Haut-Brion that combines generosity and elegance. It's rich, and velvety, with a vibrant ruby rim, all conveying structure and a sense of power. The flavour floods in through the mid-palate, displaying wonderfully vibrant blackberry, blueberry, slate, touches of blond tobacco, freshly cut herbs and exotic spicing. You can feel in the texture that it's a warm year, not holding back. It's powerful but elegant and unforced at the same time, with some brambled edges that give a welcome sense of acidity and a touch of bitterness. Barrel Sample: 98

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 98 Points (2018)
A quintessential expression of this terroir, the 2018 Château Haut-Brion checks in as 49.4% Merlot, 38.7% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Cabernet Franc brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. Ripe and sexy, yet also offering subtle aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, smoked earth, tobacco leaf, truffle, lead pencil, and minerals, it takes its time opening up but reveals a full-bodied, concentrated, multi-layered style carrying gorgeous tannins, flawless balance, and just a wonderful symmetry and elegance paired with beautiful richness. This noble, gorgeous Haut-Brion will benefit from 7-8 years of bottle age and cruise for 40 years or so.
