Origins

John Blandy first set foot on Madeira in 1808 to work in the accounting office of Newton, Gordon, Murdoch, wine merchants in Madeira at the time.

It was during the following years after he arrived that he established the wine company in 1811, developing also other businesses as managers and agents of ships and their cargo using Funchal as a port of call.

Today, the Blandy family continue to own and operate the Madeira Wine Company, preserving a tradition that has lasted for over 200 years and seven generations.

The Symington Family have remained as minor shareholders, maintaining an interest in the company that they had managed since 1989. It is through this successful partnership that the company is now the leading producer of premium quality wine on the island.

The winemaker, Francisco Albuquerque, has been named “Fortified Wine Maker of the Year” at The International Wine Challenge for 3 years running, reiterating the fact that the company is leading the way in the re-establishment of Madeira as one of the world’s great wines.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 92 Points (NV)
As warmer weather approaches, this is a wine that should immediately come to mind at apéritif time. This bone-dry style, with its inimitable nutty character, is so fresh, so vibrant. It has some tannins, enlivening acidity giving a great lift at the end. Bring on the freshly salted, roasted almonds.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 88 Points (NV)
Crisp and clean, with plenty of minerally essence to the rose petal, blood orange and passion fruit flavors, followed by buttery notes on the vibrant finish. Drink now through 2022.

Robert Parker (RP) : 88 Points (NV)
Chris Blandy told me that the Non Vintage Sercial 10 Year Old was exposed to greater heat than previous bottlings, the fermentation stopped slightly early to increase the level of residual sugar (55 grams per liter) and speed up the aging process. Bottled in 2015, it has a detailed bouquet with beeswax, cloves, grilled walnut and a hint of undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight bitterness on the entry. Moderate weight in the mouth with well-judged acidity, there is just a suggestion of viscosity towards the finish that is oxidative and tinged with lemongrass. It just needs a little more persistence perhaps? Still, this should offer a decade's worth of drinking pleasure, possibly more. This is available in both the U.S. and the U.K.
