Origins
John Blandy first set foot on Madeira in 1808 to work in the accounting office of Newton, Gordon, Murdoch, wine merchants in Madeira at the time.
It was during the following years after he arrived that he established the wine company in 1811, developing also other businesses as managers and agents of ships and their cargo using Funchal as a port of call.
Today, the Blandy family continue to own and operate the Madeira Wine Company, preserving a tradition that has lasted for over 200 years and seven generations.
The Symington Family have remained as minor shareholders, maintaining an interest in the company that they had managed since 1989. It is through this successful partnership that the company is now the leading producer of premium quality wine on the island.
The winemaker, Francisco Albuquerque, has been named “Fortified Wine Maker of the Year” at The International Wine Challenge for 3 years running, reiterating the fact that the company is leading the way in the re-establishment of Madeira as one of the world’s great wines.
