The nose is lifted with perfumed red berries, violets and wild blackberry fruit coming from the Petit Verdot.

The palate is medium bodied and restrained in style with tight dense fruit and a modulated structure showing balance and depth of fruit, flowing onto a long finish of chewy tannins.

This is a compact but deeply flavoured Tally.

The Balnaves' family vineyard is situated at the southern end of the famous Coonawarra Terra Rossa strip. Planted in 1975, the vineyard is now 58 hectares in size (70% planted with Cabernet Sauvignon) and has been in the family for three generations. Balnaves' position was recognized when James Halliday named them "Winery of the Year" in his 2008 Guide. Doug, together with his son Pete and daughter Kirsty, run the Balnaves vineyard and manage another 300 hectares for other… Read more

The top red for Balnaves, this has a very plush, rich and sophisticated feel with ripe redcurrants, blackcurrants and blueberries, delivered amid cedary oak spice. The palate has concentrated cassis and red-plum flavors, set in layered, fine tannins. Builds and holds well. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2012 The Tally Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve has evolved beautifully in the two years since it was last reviewed by my predecessor. Aged in 50% new oak, it shows a smoky, cedary veneer of baking spices on the nose. It's medium to full-bodied but tight and linear on the palate, with fine-grained, firm tannins. For sure, the 2013 Cabernet is more attractive for current drinking, but I'm confident this wine will outshine and outlast that wine, as it finishes long and layered, with fine echoes of cassis and vanilla.

James Halliday (JH) : 94 Points (2010)
Has a similar ProCork issue to the Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were hand-picked and received a long post-fermentation maceration on skins, extracting every bit of flavour and tannins from those skins. The wine spent 19 months in new, top quality, barriques from top cooperages. The final judgement on this wine can't be made until it is at least 10 years old (ProCork permitting), when the issue of the oak balance can be resolved. Right now, it seems too much of a good thing; hopefully, time will prove otherwise.

Apr 30, 2015 - Builds a tower of complexity around a solid base of ripe currant fruit. Hints of white pepper, tomato leaf, cocoa and other spices weave through the long and expressive finish. Drink now through 2022. –HS

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5+ Points (2008)
Tasted Sept 13 - Dense, chocolatey, black olive, black cherry - power with grace. Firm but pliant tannins. Deserves cellaring. Impressive. (RH)
