Dark cherry, dark chocolate, damson plum, and a heady potpourri of rose petal, vanilla and spice aromas lift from the glass, flow across the palate and on through to the long finish of this powerful Pinot Noir.

Tannins are plentiful and fine, creating the full, plush, fleshy texture. A warmer than average season has delivered excellent ripeness not only to the berries but also to grape stems and seeds, allowing to include around 10% whole and intact bunches in the ferments.

This technique chosen only in warm seasons allows a portion of ripe stem tannin to supplement the skin and seed tannins in bolstering a wine’s shape and structure.

Still young and firm, this brooding pinot will continue to open and develop into a more savoury expression going forward.

Ata Rangi is owned and run by Clive Paton and his wife Phyll, together with Clive’s sister Alison and winemaker Helen Masters. Clive planted the bare, stony home paddock at the edge of Martinborough in 1980 and, in doing so, was one of a handful of people who pioneered grape growing in the area. Ata Rangi’s first vineyard covered less than five hectares of thin, well-drained alluvial soil. They are now according to UK winewriter Tim Atkin, "widely regarded as New… Read more

Really pristine fruit aromas here with such pure, ripe red cherries and roses, as well as gently earthy and spicy nuances. Very fresh, precisely ripe and a pinot you can sit and just breathe in for days. The palate has a velvety layer that few others manage to find; silky at the core, succulent in the center and delivering such vibrant, red-cherry flavors in a long, pristine and fresh, red-cherry finish.

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 96 Points (2017)
A Kiwi classic that lives up to it s lofty reputation despite a vintage that presented challenges. Supple, accessible wine with plum, dark berry, spice, anise, dried herb, savoury and spicy oak flavours. Complex with a fine, tannic backbone balanced against restrained fruit sweetness. Perhaps not quite as much power and density as usual but still offers good potential

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2017)
Cool, slightly minty stem notes accent bright cherry fruit in the 2017 Pinot Noir, most of which was picked before the rains, according to winemaker Helen Masters. It's crisp and medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, refreshing finish. It may be even longer-lived than I've suggested.

Decanter (DCT) : 93 Points (2016)
This is pure, scented and delicate on the mid-palate counterbalanced by its density. It's a pretty expression, with sweet up-front plum fruit and a fine line of acidity and sinew, drawing this wine out on the medium-long finish. The whole bunch component has risen from 20% to 35% since 2013. Drink 2020-2030. (12/2017)

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 92 Points (2016)
Like many of this renowned producer's wines, this is a bottle to take your time with. It changes with every pour, from bright cranberry and raspberry fruit to licorice; from dried roses and violets to sandalwood and savory spice. The palate is medium bodied and silky textured with tightly wound, leathery tannins and fruit that feels like you could take a bite out of it. Through it all, Ata Rangi's signature mineral streak. For all its appeal, however, this wine is still a baby, elegant and complex but austere. Give it another year in the bottle, and drink until 2029.Cellar Selection

Tasted Feb 2017 - 40% whole-bunch pressed. Will be released in May 2017. Juicy, round, lively and fleshy. Hint of milkiness on the nose. Firm underneath. Very exciting.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2013)
Bright medium red. Lively, complex, soil-driven aromas of red berries, dark cherry, plum, smoke, herbs and spices. Suave and fine-grained, with cherry and darker fruit flavors complicated by a hint of menthol and forest floor and spice notes contributing a savory quality. This sappy, bright, nicely delineated wine displays a restrained sweetness and very good length, and has the firm, broad tannins to support a graceful evolution in bottle. -- Stephen Tanzer

Wine Spectator (WS) : 91 Points (2012)
Oct 2014 - Strikes a nice balance between vibrant cherry and berry flavors and more savory elements of forest floor, white pepper, eucalyptus and dried tobacco. The muscular tannins impart solid grip on the finish. Drink now through 2025.

Le Sol translated from French means “the soil”, appropriate when one considers the significant impact the stony soils of the Gimblett Gravels Vineyard have on this wine called "Le Sol".
