Apr 2017 - Neal Martin - The 2015 Maestro White is fermented in stainless steel, large foudres and concrete eggs. Winemaker Carl van der Merwe commented that it was the first vintage to show real linearity. A blend of 29% Roussanne, 23% Chardonnay, 22% Chenin Blanc, 18% Grenache Blanc and 8% Viognier, it offers impressive aromatics with heady scents of white peach, fresh pear, a hint of almond and melted candle wax. You could stick your nose in this all day! The palate is very well balanced with good weight, quite spicy with hints of lemongrass filtering through the light tropical fruit, almost more a wine of texture than flavor, which is not an easy feat to pull off.

Bright, with lovely white peach, yellow apple, fennel and melon rind notes all gliding along seamlessly. Has nice weight and mouthfeel while keeping a breezy, floral edge through the finish. Roussanne, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc and Viognier.

Roussanne, Chardonnay, Grenache Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Viognier. 70% aged in oak (10% new) and the rest in foudres and concrete eggs. Subtle and mildly smoky/creamy on the nose. Rich and rounded on the palate, generous and full in the mouth and still finishes fresh with a sour-apple aftertaste that adds to the freshness. Scented but not overly aromatic. (JH)

A blend of 26% Roussanne, 25% Chardonnay, 19% Grenache Blanc, 17% Chenin Blanc and 13% Viognier, this is a complex and layered wine. A soft flinty character lies atop a rich bouquet of yellow apple, ripe green melon, tangerine and honeycomb. The medium-weight palate offers both weight and refinement, with a smooth texture and ripe fruit flavors that are cut by ample acidity and lingering sweet-spice accents. Drink nowâ2019.

(26% Roussanne, 25% Chardonnay, 19% Grenache Blanc, 17% Chenin Blanc, and 13% Viognier; "an expression of the estate," according to assistant winemaker Hanneke Botha): Pale color. Perfumed, limey lift to the aromas of pear, mint and white flowers. Supple, fine-grained and savory, displaying a larger framework than the 2013 but less explosive fruit due to the Grenache Blanc element and the bottling two months prior to my visit. This elegant white blend needs a year or two in the cellar to express itself. 90+ (ST) (6/2015)

The 2013 release is a partially co-fermented blend of Chenin with 24% each of Chardonnay and Roussanne and 15% Viognier, fully demonstrating Carl van de Merweâs talent at combining grapes. Pear, peach and apricot fruit are balanced by subtle vanilla and skin tannins. Drink: 2014-17
