Bright ruby red in colour, this wine has complex aromas of red fruits, lightly spiced with an elegant toasted note. The palate reflects the exotic nose with hints of soft red fruits, dried mountain herbs and wild earth. Generous and soft with balanced, full-bodied structure and mature tannins before a long, evolved mineral finish.

Grape variety: Areni. Production: 20,000 bottles. Areni is the most prominent red variety in Armenia. Nothing is known about its origins and parentage, but genetic studies indicate that it is 100% Armenian. It was named after the Areni village where the world’s oldest cellar (4,000 BC) was discovered in 2011. Karasi is made from an ungrafted vineyard at 1,400 m elevation in Rind. Fermented in steel tanks and then aged part in underground amphorae (Karasi in Armenian), part in French and part in Armenian barriques. Dark purple. Earthy, cigar, raisins, spices, blackcurrants, truffles and wet stone. Pepper and coffee, full taste but light, elegant and mineral body. Orange-zest bitterness. (JV)
